Last night on The Tonight Show, the band "Eel" performed. They had a singer that played acoustic guitar, a keyboard player, and . . .
. . . A STEEL PLAYER ! !
Not PSG either, but a non pedal D8. The camera never got a good overhead closeup, but it looked like a National or Valco (rounded headstock). The guy used a ton of reverb, and did some tasty spacey glisses and stuff, but little or no vibrato.
They also had an all-female string section for a back line - no drums or percussion at all.
And when Jay came on at the end of their number, he shook hands with the Steel Player first.
I couldn't find anything about them with a Google search, though there's some other band named Eel that isn't them.
Anybody know anything about them? |

I caught the tail end of their performance.
Sounded like alot of reverb and maybe some delay on that steel.He seemed he be working the volume pedal quite a bit.
Like when we all started..to mask our not so good playing.No it was still cool to see a steel on the Tonight show.
I didn't relize it was the band Eel.From what I remember the were an alternative rock band.Not like what they sounded like last night.Maybe the band you found in google was them just not this incarnationof the band-Dave

The band was Eels.
Their web site doesn't say who plays steel, but it does say this:
Q: What is/are EELS?
A: EELS is an ever-changing lineup of musicians that play the songs of singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Mark Oliver Everett, also known as E, who grew-up in Virginia but now lives in the Silver Lake area of Los Angeles, CA. Sometimes it's just him and other times it's him and a few others. Sometimes it's him and many others.
Q: Who are some of these other people?
A: Let's see, over the years there's been drummers Butch and Puddin', bassist Koool G Murder, violinist/multi-instrumentalist Lisa Germano, guitarist John Parish, R.E.M. guitarist Peter Buck, multi-instrumentalist Jon Brion, Grant Lee Buffalo guitarist Grant Lee Phillips... These are just some of the people that have played with EELS at various times. Most recently, Tom Waits and The Lovin' Spoonful's John Sebastian have become honorary EELS. I like Eels--I discovered them through Lisa Germano, whom I like very much. I haven't heard anything new by Eels in a while, although according to the website the Tonight Show appearance coincides with the release of the new record.
Sparklehorse is another band I like, too--sort of a one man project. The Moonlighters' bass player toured with Sparklehorse when they opened for Radiohead.
Yeah, there's still lots of good music being made out there, but it's hard to find on your own. |

Rick, what are doing over here? You didn't see the Fender Quad on eBay?
Anyway...
Steel guitar pops up on all sorts of good indie-rock records these days...
Belle & Sebastian, Mojave 3, Japancakes, Of Montreal, Fruit Bats, Silver Jews, Magnolia Electric Company, Smog, Edith Frost, Giant Sand, Calexico...

Okay, yeah - The Eels. They were good too - unique . .
Thanks for the info Mike, Russ & David. It's good to see Steel Guitar on Network TV.
I'd like to appear on Conan, especially now that he's in Hi Def !

| Well, not Conan but for those of you in the know: The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson Fri 5/6 (CBS). Meaning they'll likely be in the studio here earlier in the week. LLSwCF tapes Friday segments ahead of time so they can have three-day weekends. |
