Of note: fire engine red Maverick on eBay; 3x5, including teardrops and a vertical! A student guitar for someone who wants a Sho-Bud?
Upscale Maverick
Not recommending; just noting.

Are all Maverick pedals positioned close to center like this?
Just curious,

Looks alright. I'd like to see some closer up/larger pics.
It could be pretty cool...depending on who did the mods & how skilled they were. Then again, it could be pure crap.
If I had the money, perhaps I'd take the gamble. Then again, perhaps not. |

I think this is a forum member's work. I seem to recall a posting showing this guitar and a discussion of what was done. _________________ Best regards,

Ah, I see it's made the rounds, and yes, that's the one, pedals mid-ship and all. I admire the workmanship. And, it's very red. _________________ Those that say don't know; those that know don't say.--Buddy Emmons |

That baby IS on steroids. Looks like he started with a Maverick cabinet, then added a raised neck. GOT to be a great-sounding guitar with that kind of neck arrangement on top of what was already ShoBud's most rigid cabinet to begin with. Nice work!!

This is not one of the later Mavericks with the fake wood covering and no neck. I had one just like this one. The early Mavericks had a nice maple body and raised, wrap-around maple neck. There were aluminum end plates and non-adjustable light-weight thin aluminum tubing for the nonadjustable legs. The pedal bar looked like the one on this one, with the pedals in the middle, but mine had the wide Sho-Bud pedals. I don't know what finishes Sho-Bud offered. Mine was enamel baby blue. I stripped it and stained the body cherry, left the neck natural, and lacquered it. It looked very nice. The tuners had plastic buttons, and no roller nuts. I replaced the key head with a standard tear drop roller-nut keyhead. The stock RKR lowered the 2nd and 9th strings a half-step, and I had Sho-Bud add a LKL that raised the Es to F.
The seller says the red finish is original. I didn't know they had such a lacquer finish on any Mavericks, but there were a variety of colors. The maple on mine had a few incidental birdseyes, but I would not characterize it as birdsey Maple, not like the pro models Sho-Bud sold. But if they made a Maverick with a lacquer finish at that time, they probably would have chosen a piece of wood with more birdseyes than they put on mine, which was intended to be enameled.
He has obviously rebuilt the old coat-hanger undercarriage and added modern type mechanics. I can't tell what he has done to the changer, but he has made the cutout on the endplate bigger and added a row of plastic hex tuners, probably for the knee levers. He says it is the original changer (which was pull and release) and that he has altered it. If that's the original Maverick pickup, that would be the first thing I'd replace.
This is basically a nice early Maverick maple body, with greatly upgraded mechanics. |
