Seen him recently,
he commented on something a day or so ago.

In Dallas he said he was going to spend some time with Habitat for Humanity, building houses in New Orleans. Don't know if that's going on now or not. So he's not just another pretty face, he's a good guy. |

I was disappointed not to see Jim on the playing roster at the Dallas show. Jim is an excellent musician with class and style, who always has a pleasing tone. I know that you can't get everyone up there, but in my opinion, Jim is one of the best and should have been playing. I want to hear him play in Dallas next year, I'm sure you all agree. |

I figure either he is compiling all the old jokes he remembers from Groucho Marx or practicing. & awe _________________ Bo Borland

Here I is! It's nice to be missed every once in awhile. It's true, my wife, son, a friend of his, and I spent the better part of a week down in New Orleans building houses with Habitat for Humanity. It was the boys' Spring Break from their senior year in High School, and they really wanted to do this, rather than just go hang out on the beach, watch girls, and drink too much beer (go figure! )
It was a great experience for all of us. We were helping to build the Musicians' Village, which is a group of about 80 (?) new-construction houses in the upper 9th ward, which was pretty well decimated during Katrina. Almost every house on every block is vacant and gutted. A few folks living in FEMA trailers on their lots, and a few who are rebuilding on their own. The 7 acre lot for the Musicians' Village was paid for by Dave Matthews, and in collaboration with Harry Connick Jr (and the Marsalis family is also involved somehow, I believe), they donated the tract to Habitat for Humanity and these houses are intended to help bring back a lot of New Orleans musicians who left during Katrina. About 1/2 of the houses are supposed to be for musicians (tho' I hear there are not enough qualified musician-applicants yet, so if you're interested, there might be an opportunity to buy one at a 30-year zero-percent interest mortgage rate).
Anyway, we all learned a few good house-building skills while we were down there, had a ball, and spent the evenings eating great food, going to jazz clubs, and wandering in the French Quarter, which is very much open for business. It was a great thing to do. Habitat has their act very much together down there and their process works very smoothly, despite having over 250 volunteers each day (the prior week, due to more spring breaks happening, they had over 900 volunteers per week; I hear that was quite a stretch for them to cope with.)
Anyway, I'm back and ready to hang out with y'alls.
Thanks for lookin' after me, Fred.

Hi Jim, That was a wonderful thing for you and your family to do. New Orleans was torn apart in so many ways thatit will take years and years for things to even approach some normality. Although the Quarter is pretty much up and running not much of the reast of the city's economy is up to par. I wonder how much work will be available to these musicians in the coming years. Only time will tell.
Thanks Jim,
Billy |

Good on you Jim and family!
If you hammer anything like you play steel,
then a no interest mortgage on a Cohen built house
is a pretty darned good deal.
Musician's village, nice concept. _________________ DLD, Chili farmer. Plus bananas and papaya too.

Jim, I'd appreciate it if you'd pass along my personal kudos to your son and his friend.
If more young people took their attitude the world would be in a lot better shape, and the future would probably look a lot healthier to more of their peers as well.
Habitat is a fantastic program that is making a real difference in many lives, and a model for how we should treat our neighbors locally and globally. I'm very proud of those young men, and you too! |

Hi Jim,
Good work buddy. Of course that doesn't excuse you from abandoning the Forum. We were all worried that you'd taken up the bassoon! Say hi to your son for me.
