There was a post recently under this heading - now I cannot find it. Do these things disappear or am I losing it? Have had a letter from Geoffrey Edmonds who used to play with them ( not on records ) and I would like to send Bas's info. just for old times sake. Actually, it is great he is still with us. Any help, any one?

A peaceful group of people who had a great life, until the White Man showed up and destroyed their culture and made them wear more clothes. :)

(Yes, I get it, it's a musical group...)

Kia Ora Mac... The "Hawaiian Islanders" were probably a bunch of haoles who never stepped foot on Hawaiian soil. JMHO. Wink

Actually, it's been a commonly used name.

If you want to dig into their history, you will find that some haole missionary types, religious SOBs from the north-east U.S. were the ones who trashed the culture to begin with. They didn't want Hawaiian spoken and banned the hula. Sad

Seems like the word "Islanders" was used for countless Hawaiian music groups, and why not, they really were islanders!! Very Happy

Kealoha Life, who played the Steel and was an excellent vocalist, and Luisa Moe were part of group called, The Hawaiian Islanders who recorded back in the late 1930's. Kealoha Life was born in London and did have a long association with Felix Mendelssohn.

Kealoha Life's name will come up with many groups in addition to the Hawaiian Islanders.

Also, there have been many groups who have adopted the name Hawaiian Islanders.

Thanks for the replies, but someone asked this question and Basil came up with all the info. on the group comprising the Hodgkinson (?) brothers and Peter (?) composing Tiger Shark. But now I cannot find it and wondering if these things disappear or am I losing it? As a name, Hawaiian Islanders was fairly and freely traded. These days someone would copyright the name and we would all have to pay.

What I said was
Quote:
The Hawaiian Islanders :-

TITLE: Hawaiian Paradise
MEDIA: LP
LABEL: Embassy Wlp 6029

The Hawaiian Steel Guitar is by a UK session player, Billy Bell (Died June 1995. Two years after the passing of his wife)

The name Hawaiian Islanders was actually the name of the Hodgkinson brothers group, they wrote "Tiger Shark"
Billy used the name Hawaiian Islanders by agreement with Peter Hodgkinson. Billy was originally given permission use the name for BBC broadcasts and later to be used on recordings.

More about Tiger Shark

The actual thread is here :- http://bb.steelguitarforum.com/viewtopic.php?p=910870#910870

More 'islanders';

Who were The Kauai Islanders?

All I know is, they may have been a Nordic group of the post WW2 era, whose steeler used an interesting 2X6 Vox Humana.
