| I'm in chapter 5 of Johnny Bush's "Whiskey River". He said in here that when he was a kid listening to records on the radio, he thought that there was a live band playing every song. For myself, I thought there was one man doing all these things. Now remember I was 10-11 years old with a $3 guitar. I think Bush is about 4 years older than me. We didn't have TV, so we couldn't see what was going on. I was raised on a farm, so I did'nt see a live band till one came to our school. I think I read something about the same on Hag. Anybody else born in late 30's-early 40's have any experiences here? Doyle |

Doyle,That brings back great childhood memories,I was raised by my grandparents on a farm waaaaaay back in the sticks in south Ga,Did'nt even have a car just a ,mule[could'nt afford a horse]and wagon,And had a battery radio.when I was around ten heard Hank Snow doing Moving ON,That changed my life,I knew then I had to play music.Picked cotton,saved my money and bought myself a Stella guitar.The steel guitar on that song is the first thing that got my attention,I was so naive I thought that was Hank making those sounds on his sixstring,Anyway I got to go see Hank at the Rylander Theater in Americas Ga.[The little town that was almost destroyed by the tornados a few weeks ago]when I was around ten,That's been about 57 years ago,and that show is still vivid in my mind,have played many shows and seen many,many,shows over the years that I have completely forgotten,but that one is still fresh in my mind.

The same way we made it without cell phones,cable tv,this computer we are all addicted to,microwaves,supersonic planes,interstates,nutty professors in our schools,belligerent children in our schools,nutty judges in our courts,and people that have made fortunes in the great nation they are now trying to destroy.

| Charlie, I forgot about that battery radio. For the younger ones that might read this we are talking about a car battery here, not a transistor type like we have now. I also thought the earlier steel was done on a regular guitar, and tried to copy them as close as I could. Doyle |

Doyle,mentioning the battery reminded me,As I said I lived with my grangparents on a farm,remember for a while my granma's cousin and her husband stayed with us for a little while,he had an old 40's something car,at night when they were all asleep I would sneak out get in the car and listen to the radio,in that car one night I heard a new singer doing a song called Mystery Train,a newcomer called Elvis.The old fellow never could figure out why his battery was dead most of the time,and I never told him,Shame on me.

| How about post-TV? Actually, TV will always be with us, although traditional network broadcast television is dying a slow and painful death. By the way, is there anyone out there that still has an antenna on the roof to bring in the TV signals? |

Worse, I'm too cheap for cable. I have rabbit ears.

I gave up paying for cable about 15 years ago. I use a tunable set of ears on top of my, get this, 13" tv. I can watch abc,cbs,nbc,fox,upn,wb,pbs.

I grew up in the 60's and when I was a few years old and we listened to music on the radio, I thought the singers/band were at the radio station poerforming live. On the other hand when I listened to records I knew it was a recording. I don't know why I thought there was a difference.
When I was five my dad took me to the radio/TV station in Austin MN. It was quite the eye opener for a five year old. My cool memory of it though was being the "Live Audience" for the local afternoon childrens show. My dad and I were the live audience. I don't remember the name of the show, but it has a space theme. When the star of the show went out of his space ship into outerspace, he went into a closet.
I got rid of cable about 15 years ago too. I don't miss it. I enjoy subscribing to the Rabbit Ears Network. There's very little on cable for me to justify 30-40-50 bucks a month. |

| Hey, I appreciate the posts here. Now I'm going off-topic just a tad, but I finished "Whiske River". I've got to say Johnny Bush had to have an outlook on the music buisness bigger than Texas to keep coming back like he did. One hell of a book. One hell of a singer. Keep it goin' John. Doyle P.S. I do have Dish as far as TV goes. And RFD has some of the old shows on, which I enjoy. |
