Does anyone know if there is a difference in the old original dd3,and the one that they make now?

Yes there is. The older ones were made in Japan and some, not all had a large high quality chip in them which made them sound warmer. There were a few older ones on eBay recently. The new ones are not bad, they just don't sound as sweet. If you do a Google search, you can see photos of this larger chip.
