I was reading the other day that Greg Leisz owns many lap steels but tends to play his 6 stringers most often. Where do you stand?

I have 10-8-and 7 string guitars......but prefer my olde Ric SIX STRING g'tars. I enjoy the olde stuff and as JERRY BYRD once told me, I'm stuck in a TIME WARP! The slants are much of my playing....and the wider spaced strings seem to be a natural for doing just that. The Ric is one of the "easiest" guitars I've ever played and the music just seems to flow out of one's fingers.

So, that's what gets my vote. I use the C6th with the C# on that bottom string and it gives me everything I've ever wanted or needed.

My instrument's got 7 but I only really play 6. Any strings after 6 I just use to get a fuller chord or a bass note.

What Jeff said. I own only one six string, a New yorker, and only keep it because I bought it new.

I have a D8 steel; however, I also play a 5 string electric bass. (to tell you the truth I did just as well with my 4 string bass but I am shopping for a good used Remington, D10 steel)

I mostly play 6 string, but also mostly for Hawaiian.

When I am playing western swing, I prefer the 8 string for the different chord options (especially with Leon's E13 tuning).

I voted for 8 because that's what I generally play,
I mostly use A6, high C6 and E7 tunings.
When I play a show I take the Steelmaster T-8, and I also record with it.
And there's nothing like a Stringmaster D-8 or T-8 or Quad!
I like playing 6 string lap steels too, I use them in the studio a lot.
Right now I'm working up a new tune with the Beard Goldtone Reso that followed me home from the TSGA Jamboree.

Right now I'm playing my 6 string Goldtone more than any thing else. Since I've learned a few licks and can play a few songs on it, I can't put the thing down. I jest luv dis thing! Very Happy

Anybody that hadn't got Jim Heffernan's 100 licks for dobro, are missing out on some real good stuff!
And Cindy Cashdollar's DVD's are great also!

Eight strings is my magic number - I need some extensions. I really don't even have any 6 stringers except for my Dobro and I kinda wish that had 8. I have an 8-string Ricky G Deluxe,2 Stringmasters and my favorite for pure playing pleasure - an 8-string CruzTone.

Depends on the way the wind blows. I play 6, 8s and a twin neck 10 pedal steel. 8 is my favourite. Have, on occasion, hovered round the very low frets on the very low strings on the 8, for example on "Ring of Fire".

Because the poll asked specifically which instrument do you play most often, I voted 8 string. The following may explain it: 3 D-8's, 3 S-8's, 2 S-6's

However I do like to play 6 strings because of the string spacing.

Fender T-8, A-6, E-13, and C-11. All necks are *7* string tunings. I've done this for years. I have never found a place to put an eighth string, (or note), that was as useful to me as it was in the way. Jimmie

I seem to be in the process of moving from 6 to 8. But I also like the spacing of the 6 string guitar. Maybe I'll get over it.

Definitely 8 strings when playing electric lap steel, but 6 strings on the dobro.

Six strings for me for a number of reasons.

1. I've played guitar since I was 14. Six strings are firmly imprinted in my brain.

What about the uke you ask? The uke is tiny - four strings are natural on it.

2. String spacing on anything greater than 6 is too tight.

3. Seven strings look weird to me when I stare down at the guitar - I'm weird, what can I say?

I play both but the low strings on the 8 stringers rarely get played.

I've noticed that there has always been a focus on lap steels with 8 or more strings in the discussions on this forum. It's almost like there is an assumption that having more strings is obviously better and that 6 stringers are inferior. So far, though, it looks like most people actually play 6 stringers more often (as do I). I wonder if we've developed a kind of inferiority complex with playing 6 string even though they sound great and are played all the time. I suppose this is my "I love playing 6 string lap steel and it's OK" post Very Happy.

That would be an inferior assumption. It's what you play on the strings you use that counts.
More isn't necessarily better, but it is more . .

I'm sure that I was reading into things. I have to admit that instruments with lots of strings are very enticing because of the chordal options. I suppose it's what style you are trying to play as well.
