About half my gigs these days are playing early jazz, blues and western swing on my Stringmaster. One of the main things I love about it is that everything in my set up sounds just freakin perfect ! I'm playing a short scale 58 Fender Stringmaster D8 through a Fender vol/tone pedal into a 69 Fender Deluxe reverb. Every gig I play I'm astonished at how subtle and expressive the rig is. I'm hoping to get more recording work with it. Most everybody that is paying me to be on there cd wants the pedal steel but I'm trying to get that fantastic Fender thing out there as best i can. Its a real workout for me without the pedals but I'm having a ball with it. Last night I was set up next to the drummer on a western swing gig and before every solo I would yell at him " Hey Konrad, check this out. I play the world's funnest instrument !" And then play some nutty solo. The role of the steel in early music is so open and free. Its a pleasure not having to worry about making a singer sound good like in current pop music.

That would be the one and only mighty Konrad Meissner ! He will be on Letterman with Teddy Thompson coming up real soon. I play gigs with Konrad pretty constantly.

I had the pleasure of sharing the bill with the Silos a few years back, and totally enjoyed his playing. Later, I was fortunate to play a show with him at the Knitting Factory NYC, backing Chris Mills and Nora O'Conner. Good times being part of that section! Hey Bob, have you seen Michael Evans recently?
