Tommy played my favorite set this year ! This man is not only a picker but an entertainer ! This was his second year to play Highway 40 Blues. I talked to him in the afternoon before his set and asked if it was on the agenda again this year and he graciously arranged to play it. His entire set was great but of coarse my two favorites were Highway 40 and Dance With Me. I could remember bits of Dance With Me from years past but knew nothing else about it. Tommy said it was by a group known as "Orleans" and he picked it up from Jeff Newman. I hope the following site will work-let's give it a try-

Tommy Dodd and Dance wth Me has been the best live presentation on steel guitar I have ever experienced. His performance at the ASGA in Montgomery was a classic. I bought the album and it is great but Tommy "live" can't be beat.
It is the joining of the man and his instrument and they are both great. We need Tommy in St Lois this year. Next time I saw him was inSt Louis in one of the steel rooms, playing barefooted. Maybe thats how he gets more feel in his music. My feet are still sore and nothing has gotten better yet. Hats OFF to Tommy.

Jody, and all, thanks for the nice words about my "theme" song (I think I've been branded with this) Dance With Me. The song was originally done by a pop group by the name of Orleans but I heard it first from one of my mentors, the great teacher, Jeff Newman. He always accused me of steeling it from him, kiddingly of course, and I would say I only stole from the best. So he should be flattered I stole it from him and not some pop group!
Anyway, we always have a lot of fun with it and I get off stage on a happy note.
Thanks again... |

Tommy is one of my all-time favorite steel players for sure! I had quit playing steel for about 16 years but always kept my old '79 P/P in the closet.
In 2001, I heard Tommy play for the first time in TX and his excitement, high energy and song selection, especially with 'Dance With Me' inspired me to start playing the steel once more...so, for all you folks who have had to hear me squeak away on the steel over the past few years, you now can blame Tommy Dodd for inspiring me to try playing again and have fun! HA HA Tommy's the best! |
