All original 1987 pre-Gibson OMI Dobro in nearly unplayed condition. Looks like it's been hidden away for 20 years. Factory custom with upgrades galore!
Six string, squareneck with natural finish mahogany body/neck. Fancy engraved chrome cover. Fully bound, ebony fingerboard with diamond, MOP fretmarkers. Slotted and bound ebony covered peghead with inlaid Dobro logo and pearloid tuners. Locking, hardshell case.
Nice warm tone. A special instrument for the price of a stock 60D.
Price reduced to $1295 from $1495 plus FedEX shipping and insurance. Lower 48 only please. Email with any questions.

Had a couple of requests for the serial # located on top of headstock. It is: 8 632 7D

Gibson bought OMI in 1993. (And a single "8" digit reads like 1978 to me. Expert witness: http://www.provide.net/~cfh/dobro.html#omi)

This is NOT a Gibson instrument. It was manufactured by OMI. OMI was owned and operated by the Dopyera brothers. This is a quality guitar that has not been ruined by Gibson mass production. It you want an original Dobro, this is the one to get.

I think we should give Mr. Lazarus the benefit of the doubt, even though the word "convoluted" often accompanies the phrase "history of the Dobro."

1980-1988 OMI Dobro: 8 (#)### yD configuration.
8 is the decade of manufacture (8=1980s).
2 or 3 or 4 numerals in center are serial number for year.
Numeral y before letter is last digit of year.
Last character is body type: D=wood, B=metal.

Ben, I believe John's assessment of 1987 is right on the money, if you look at the above chart once again.

His mistake, as pointed out by Robert, is that it is a Gibson owned instrument. Especially if you spend time with the hard core reso guitar folks, that is a mistake you don't want to make- it just lessens its worth! Shocked

Though Gibson bought the company in 1993, they didn't actually move the production from Southern California to their Nashville facility until 1998, and that is when things started to sometimes get ugly.

Being that this is a 1987 guitar, that would make it six years prior to when Gibson became involved.

That is a beautiful guitar, too bad I am in the midst of a GAS moratorium, or "No Buy" zone!

OMI Dobro made some fine instruments, and some not-so-fine instruments, and today's reso builders are making some of the best guitars in the history of the genre. OMI Dobro is a different era than the pre World War II Dobro company.

This does not look like a regular production guitar, more of a "limited run" type of thing. Obviously it comes down to the sound, but it's a beauty and it just looks like it sounds good! Smile

Wow! I wasn't trying to start a Dobro history war. I don't know much about these instruments and I freely admit it. If it is prior to Gibson's involvement in Dobro/OMI, then I defer to more knowledgeable forumites. I have corrected the original posting to be more accurate. But, I am quite sure it is a 1987 vintage and it appears that it was not a regular production run. It is likely a custom or semi-custom, special order instrument and it looks nearly new. It is clear and warm in tone; almost silky compared to the stock maple model 60D.

No war here, John! Smile

Just trying to strive for accuracy, and help you out.

Alluding to what I wrote above, if you have a pre-Gibson instrument, that is to your advantage as far a making a sale to "resoheads."

Thanks Mark. I do appreciate your input and I hope the Dobro posting is now more accurate.
