From time to time when I try to play audio or video in a website, using Firefox, I get a notification that says "The plug-in performed an illegal operation. You are strongly advised to re-start Firefox".
If I check the "Don't show this message again during this session" box and close the notification window, I can go ahead and play the audio or video.
What does "illegal operation" mean, and is there a way to stop getting these notices? |

That indicates to me that the plug-in being used to playback the streaming media is out of date and needs to be updated to the current version. Furthermore, if we are talking about the QuickTime plug-in, Apple just released version 7.1.5 as a security fix for 6 highly critical vulnerabilites. See my Post about this, here.
The correct procedure is usually to uninstall the existing plug-in, reboot, then install the newest version of that application, then re-associate the desired file types (also covered in my other post about QuickTime). _________________ "Wiz" Feinberg, Moderator SGF Computers Forum

I had just installed QT Alternative on March 6th!
I uninstalled the QT Alternative 1.76 I had (I also uninstalled K-Lite Codec Pack and Real Alternative, and rebooted after uninstalling all three.), and tried to install QTA 1.78.
I clicked on the link in your post which you linked to, and it puts me on a K-Lite Codec Pack download page. When I click on QTA 1.78 in the list, it puts me on a different K-Lite download page that only has QTA 1.76 on it. When I click on that, it sends me back to the first page, etc.!
Should I try one of the "Mirror" links instead? What does "Mirror" mean? |

It means that you have the right to remain silent.......
I had a friend that used to get really bugged about those notices..
I never felt I had anything to hide.

Well, I used the Mirror link and it worked, so I installed QT Alternative 1.78 and re-installed Real Alternative and K-Lite Codec Pack, having previously uninstalled everything as mentioned above. Then I rebooted and went to the Tilley website,
www.etsga.org/etsga50.htm
and the first couple of links played, but the Bob McCormick link got me the danged "Illegal Operation" notice again, and couldn't be played even after "bypassing" the notice as mentioned above. The second time I tried it I got "Firefox has encountered a problem and needs to close". Third time it was back to "Illegal Operation". |

I wonder if one of your Firefox add-ons is causing the problems. Try disabling all extensions, restart Firefox, then try to play that tune. I am listening to it right now, without any problems. It is playing in the QT alternative player, 1.78.
BTW: I am not using the codec pack at this time. You might want to try uninstalling it and just use the Real and QT alternative players/plug-ins. There might be a codec fight going on. Plus, the codec packs install Media Player Classic, as do the alternative players. It is not beyond the realm of possibility that the player in the alternatives is newer than the one in the codec packs, and they are in conflict. _________________ "Wiz" Feinberg, Moderator SGF Computers Forum

I uninstalled the Codec Pack, keeping QT Alternative and Real Alternative, and they all seem to be playing now.
When installing the three programs I unchecked the Media player Classic in two of the three, keeping it only in QT Alternative, thinking having it in all three would be duplicative and/or cause conflicts. |

So, you are confirming my findings that there is a version conflict between alternative players and the latest codec packs?
If this is the case use caution about installing codec packs if you also install the stand-alone alternative players.
I think that one of the codec packs has the alternative players included. Perhaps someone can test that full codec pack and it's enclosed alternate players, to see if they have problems functioning. I don't need the extra codecs so I'm sticking with the stand-alone players. _________________ "Wiz" Feinberg, Moderator SGF Computers Forum
