A week has went by since the Saturday night show in Irving. The set by Jay Dee Maness was just awesome. His song selection was well thought out but his playing and tone was so impressive. He was playing a new MSA Studio Pro if I have the name right. What a great sounding steel guitar. I walked away being a bigger fan of Jay Dee Maness than I was before. I just did not realize he was as great as he is and I sure apologize for. If any of you guys have never seen Jay Dee Maness play in a live concert, you are in for a real treat. That Saturday night show was fantastic with all that performed and I sure look forward to nexxt years show. |

I have to agree with you 100%. Jay Dee is great, not only as a player but as a person. Jay Dee was playing the new MSA studio pro. It is a wonderful sounding and extremely well built instrument. I hope to enjoy his playing at future shows. |

Yeah, Jay Dee is awesome! Desert Rose Band were (are!) ALL legend/monsters in their own right, love them all, but IMO Jay Dee "made" their sound...

I totally agree; I was impressed 40 years ago when I first met Jay Dee. IMO, they don't come any better or sound any better. |

In Jay-Dee related news...
I was in the studio yesterday helping out Archie Francis with the final mix of his album, which features Jay Dee and Al Bruno -- his old buddies from the Palomino.
There's a lot of sweet, sweet steel AND great dobro by Jay Dee on this record. I think he's on every single track... And Al did and awesome job too.
This album's been long in the making, and I think it's probably a few weeks away from being released, but I just wanted to give people a heads up. If you're a fan of that particular sound, this is the real deal, and you're not going to wanna miss it... |

Well maybe so. I agree with most of everything said so far. But, I think it was in bad taste for Jay Dee to play "Look At Us" with John Hughey standing in the wings. That's a signature song for John in my opinion. I think the audience was in an awkward position of not knowing whether to applaud or not. Later when John played it he got a well deserved standing ovation. _________________ GFI D10-8/6 Black/Red

As the saying goes "Imitation is the highest form of flattery", I think it was nice that Jay Dee played "Look At Us". I like hearing different versions of these standard songs anyway. I've probably heard John play it a hundred times, and still like his version too. Lots of people play Buddie's signature songs, and no one thinks anything about it, at least they don't say anything about it. _________________ Darvin Willhoite
MSA Millennium, Legend, and Studio Pro, Reese's restored Universal Direction guitar, a restored MSA Classic SS, several amps, new and old, and a Kemper Powerhead that I am really liking. Also a Zum D10, a Mullen RP, and a restored Rose S10, named the "Blue Bird". Also, I have acquired and restored the plexiglass D10 MSA Classic that was built as a demo in the early '70s. I also have a '74 lacquer P/P, with wood necks, and a showroom condition Sho-Bud Super Pro. |

I wish that I could have been there. I'd love to hear Jay Dee do his version, then John do it his way. I'd love to have a tape of this, in fact it would be nice to be able to source each one that played on YouTube. IMO, the quality of the steel music these days is simply amazing. |

Jay Dee would never insult another player.
Certianly not some one like John Hughey. |

I went to a Chet Atkins convention in 1994. I wish I had a buck for every player that did one of his signature tunes. |

Jay Dee also played Misty, Tears in Heaven, and Borrowed Angel... pretty sure that was it. Four tunes, if I remember right. It was over way too soon.
He really did sound awesome...as always. |

It did not bother me that Jay Dee played "Look At Us" with John Hughey standing there. If I remember right he cleared it with John before playing the song. I was just so happy to hear him play I would not have cared what songs he played. Jay Dee just sounded fantastic and that is what counts to me. I would bet that those two men are good friends and it would not bother either one of them if the other played one of their songs. Some would consider it an honor. |

Jay Dee was my favourite of the weekend. I got to see him up close in the MSA room as well as on the mainstage. I always marvel at how Jay Dee can carry on a lick about 8 bars after you think it's been exhausted. His knowledge of the fretboard and all the pulls is outstanding. His ability to improvise is second to none, and his tastful execution of chromatic runs and fills is just joy to witness in person. He is also a really nice guy. I got a chance to have a brief chat with him and Skip Edwards (also pictured here), another great guy and excellent steel player (on top of his keyboard prowess). Jim Palenscar should have been in this picture. Those guys from California are very friendly, authentic people and a pleasure to know.

I have commented on the tone of the new guitar Jay Dee was playing. Does anyone know what kind of pickup he is using in his steel guitar? I noticed on the MSA site the Studio Pro is a maple body steel guitar and the picture they show on their site is awesome. |

On this recent thread (http://bb.steelguitarforum.com/viewtopic.php?t=105508), Johnny Cox said Jay Dee's pickup was the new Tonealighner. |

JayDee is the greatest. He's got the thickest tone in show business today... Just to let you know, his videos give you all the insight you need to get some of "his thing" under your belt... that sounds xrated, but you know what I mean... http://jaydeemaness.com . Check it out.. |

Jay Dee is a powerhouse. I have enjoyed hearing him play live many times at the Opry. Always fresh ideas, great playing, punch in the face tone and a very kind gentleman too. |
