Congrats Rick! I just got my first spyder bridge reso a few weeks ago too--a Schoonover. They're loads of fun--a whole new world!

Rick our numbers are pretty close!
I always tuned to Bluegrass G but for the
past few months it's been D Major exactly as yours was tuned when you received it.
I put a Quarterman cone in mine several years ago. The original cone had four factory
drilled holes. Can you check that out on yours and if you see those holes looking through the metal top. If they are there, it will indicate the original cone is still in there.

Rick, I have had 6 resos, and I'm now down to 4. My favorite is my Beard "Mike Auldridge" model. I suggest that you never go near one, or you will be $3,500 poorer for sure. I also have a 1935 Regal which has an amazing old timey sound, a standard 1993 Gibson Dobro, and a National Resophonic Tricone. The Beard gets the most play and they all have G tuning on them. I would definitly suggest playing with the standard G tuning for awhile. I heard that Jerry Douglas fellow has gotten some use out of that tuning. |

That's a good suggestion Bill. I'm looking for another Reso just for that purpose so I can keep the D tuning too. I have G tuning on one of my lap steels, & I'm looking forward to playing it on a Reso . . |

Hi Rick
I have one of these with SB 6/8/78 penciled inside. It was my 1st Dobro and I've had it since the early 80's. From the picture yours, like mine when I got it, appears to have the cover plate and the spider, a few degrees clockwise off centre. Mine came with a totally rubbish pressed cone and a piece of rubbery acrylic for a nut. With these issues addressed these OMI Dobros are strong, good sounding guitars, and much better value than modern oriental cheapos. I crank mine from high bass G through the D tuning variations with no problems on the same string set (15-56). I can't do that with my old Style III tricone. |

Nice to see people still playing the American made OMI Dobros. I was buying, selling, and refurbishing them for awhile. They are a well built guitar.

I tried that after Bill suggested it and found the same thing - no problems! It's almost like having 2 different guitars . .
I'm pretty sure this one is all original. It sounds good to me, but I've never owned a reso before so I have nothing to compare it to.
I've been looking at the Benoit Resos - they look real interesting. HowardR says they're great. I'd maybe like to try an 8 string . . |

Howdy Rick
you must have a whereas to keep
all the instruments you have ! or tools
of the trade !!!
I have tried other tunings on my
Dobro ! and always go back to G ,
some thing about 6th tunings just
don't get it for me on a Reso !
From the photo you have up , It
looks to me to be a Quarterman
cone installed , The 70's stile cone
has a sharper ridge where the spider
sets . -
Don't take this to the bank ! ---
I have been known to be wrong !
If you look at the cone where it is
closest to the bridge ! if its a quarterman !
there will only be about a Half inch gap .
The original cone was not as tall in the
center and the gap maybe an inch or more .
Enjoy !! I love my Dobe
another little known fact ! our own Joey Ace
is a Dobro Recording Star !!!!
