Just received my order for a Black Phoenix from Chuck Brattain.
Of all the pieces of equipment (Hilton Digital,RV3,etc) I have acquired over the years, this is the most inexpensive purchase I have ever made and yet, having the most positive impact on my tone/sound.
Do not, I repeat, do not hesitate to get one like I did.
This bar is a marvel... It has exceeded my expectations beyond my wildest weirdo imagination.
Here's what I found:
A. Total quiet over the strings, especially the lower wound one's.
B. This bar slides like a golf ball at Augusta National's greens. Outrageously fast & smooth. A #20 on the Stimpmeter.
C. Makes slants and even reverses like a dream.
D. Precise & total control right where you want it!! Cold or warm, stays in you hand like a leather glove.
E. Because it's so quiet, a significant reduction of clanking with hammer-on's or on my cat's head.
F. Vibrato that'll melt your heart and BB King's too.
Now unless your are a purist still using a coconut shell for a bar....you will undoubtedly be pleasantly surprised like I was...Do not hesitate! I wished I had gotten one long, long ago.
Chuck Brattain is a real pleasure to deal with too..enjoy....TX

That's funny...I just decided this morning that I need a new bar. My Dunlop 919s have a lot of little surface scratches (nothing too deep yet). I'd like to get a bar that doesn't "scratch" (if that's possible).
I have a few questions about the Black Phoenix:
1. Do they come in various sizes and weights? I like a smaller size bar (like the Dunlop Jerry Byrd 919).
2. Is there a recessed end for the thumb when doing reverse slants?
3. Will the black coating eventually "wear off"?
4. Is there a loss in sustain? (I only ask this because I tried a red coated one years ago, and I could detect some tone and sustain loss).
5. Will it last a loooong time?
6. Is there a website with prices, info, etc?
Thanks!! |

Chuck makes excellent coated bars and finger picks, no question about it! And his Control Ring is a wonderful invention.
Plus he's also a published columnist! |

Jeff,
1. Yes, in many sizes.
2. Yes, more recess than on my other bars.
3. Don't know..I have a light touch anyway. Instruction is too let the bar do the work, just like a golf club. Don't push it.
4. For me, I found the opposite is true. I failed to mention that important fact in my post. Maybe it's me. (I'm sustain obsessive) I really think I get more sustain with it.
5. I just got it...Hope it's a couple of years before I report it. Still, because of the other attributes, I wouldn't hesitate.
6. Web is www.aguitarcenter.com, email chuckguitar@msn.com....
Enjoy the heck out of it.... TX
