Wiz, or anybody. I've been fooling with the FIle Transfer Wizard, and tried to connect the two puters together with a 1394 and a USB. No luck.

The Wizard says a Serial Cable will work, and that I can migrate 98SE stuff off my ole HDDs to the New XP. "without a network card".

Any more info while I'm at the gig tonite will be appreciated.

Seems odd that a Serial cable will work, and a USB or 1394 won't, but that's what the File Transfer WIzard says. The Wizard says it can autodetect a Serial Cable connection, but it won't detect the USB or 1394. I tried.

I'll be checking info after I get home and can get a serial cable tomorrow if I need to.

Thanks for any tips.

Smile

If you want to use a direct cable, such as a "serial" cable, it must be a "crossover" or "Null modem" cable. A straight cable will not work as one end will have the wrong pin configuration.

If you use a "regular" (straight) cable, the control signals will not be correct, e.g. you have Request to send on one pin but you need "Clear to send" on the other end and you wouldn't have it. Same way with send data and receive data - it has to be reversed to be correct. Same way on a USB connection or if you connected Ethernet directly. If you connect Ethernet through a Hub then it will probably work.

But the easiest way to transfer data, and it does not involve buying anything, is to temporarily connect the hard drive from the old PC in the new PC and just copy over the user data you want. You can't copy programs as they must be installed using the program's installation routine, but you can copy over user "data" songs, etc. If you don't have an open IDE slot you can "borrow" (use) one from a CD or DVD drive temporarily for the hard drive.

Oi!.

No way to get drivers for a Belkin "Usb to Usb" to go from 98 to XP. Only XP to Vista.

No serial port on my Asus. Parallel cable would take about a year to transfer my MP3s.

Maybe an ethernet connection, but wasting most of a day messing with it, I'm just going to be burning a few CDs, and cleaning up afterward.

I'm still steamed about the locking out of Windows 98 by seemingly ALL soft and hardware manufacturers.

Oh well. I've got it under control for my lifespan...

It'll be such in the future that unless you logon, and pay a daily amount, your OS won't work. The technology has existed since XP showed up.

Gotta run. Nap/Gig/Sunday Breakdown..
