The Hawaiian Islanders :-
TITLE: Hawaiian Paradise
MEDIA: LP
LABEL: Embassy Wlp 6029
The Hawaiian Steel Guitar is by a UK session player, Billy Bell (Died June 1995. Two years after the passing of his wife)
The name Hawaiian Islanders was actually the name of the Hodgkinson brothers group, they wrote "Tiger Shark"
Billy used the name Hawaiian Islanders by agreement with Peter Hodgkinson. Billy was originally given permission use the name for BBC broadcasts and later to be used on recordings.

I remember back to 1938 while in the islands and until this day if a group can't settle on a name they call themselves the Islanders. It's a nice safe name for any group and I bet since 1938 I have come across at least a 1000 groups that call themselves the Islanders. Also there are at least 10000 Al Kealohas out there. I was passing through Okinawa in 53 I believe and at the NCO club was Al Kealoha and his Islanders. I had left Guam a few hours earlier and there was another Al Kealoha and his Islanders playing at one of the NCO clubs there. CC |

none I was trying to point out the difference between them. The Hawaiian Islanders were a great group. Some of the "Islanders" were great also. I believe Alan used "The Islanders" on some of his tapes.(Too lazy to look it up). Most of the time a bunch of guys get together; "What are we going to call ourselves?" The name "Islanders" usually comes up. In Pro groups it protects the player registered with contracts to some other group. The Hawaiian Islanders should not be confused with the Islanders. If fact I was playing a gig in Monterrey Mexico with a bunch of strangers and the pub man wanted to know how to adv us and I said " the islanders". Best wishes to you and Pat. CC |
