I'm thinking about tuning one neck of my steel to E G# B E G# B E, and the other neck to E B E G B E for songs in minor, so I don't have to fiddle with turning the tuning key .
Is it common for people to do that ? Would it be practical ?

Ed,
Anything can be done but I don't recall anyone doing what you are propossing. My suggestion would be to add a C# between your top E & B strings. this would give you a C# minor or an E6th, however you want to look at it.
