I just built a swell Dynalap 8-string guitar and I'd like to safely haul it around a bit. It seems as though the instrument commands about 10x32x3 inches of interior space. Does anybody know of a reasonably-priced (OK, cheap.) case (probably made for something else) that'll fit? A custom flight case costing 4X the price of the instrument doesn't make much sense to me.

Ideas?

Breakdown shotgun cases. They come in all price ranges and varying sizes. You can cut the foam inside them with an electric carving knife, works great.

I just bought an aluminum case on eBay. 36" X 12" X 4". One of the best I've seen. Comes with layered foam that can be cut to fit your instrument. Price was 9.99 but has 32.50 shipping. 42.50 total but was worth every penny. I like mine. al

Jim, before you buy check out the cases that Fred Justice makes. He has made me a case for my Scotty Frypan. I haven't seen it yet but I've seen photo of it and it looks really good. I have faith in Fred and he will be bringing it to the Dallas show with him. Stop by my booth and check the case out. Fred will also have a booth. It might be worth the wait. Scotty

Hi Jim,

I am in agreement with Scotty. Fred Justice custom built me a case last fall for my 14 string BMI. Several others offered to build it but after careful consideration I chose Fred.

His cost was reasonable, and his craftsmanship was the best! When I recieved the case we placed my big BMI in it and it fit perfect, there was no looseness or sliding around. He had to compensate areas and take special measurements because the steel has a special built control on the endplate and of course it is very large in dimensions and weight.

There are countless possibilities but Fred takes it to state of the art. He has a website. Fred's a great steel player, heck of a nice guy, and a Christian brother. Again, I recommend him for building exactly what you need.

May God Bless!

These seem to be a good deal.
I haven't purchased one but they look nice and appear to be a good fit for the Dynalap models.
auction on eBay.

Hey Al -- I have two frypans (25"). I've laid them out, with the headstocks at opposite ends, and slightly angled. After measuring, and allowing for extra space, foam, etc., it looks like that 36"x12"x4" would fit both of them in one case. Very Happy

My question to you is, how is the quality of construction of these cases (rivets, joints, handle, etc.)? My two aluminum cast frypans weigh about 15 pounds combined. I'm just wondering how you think one of these cases might hold up to carrying 15 pounds. I see they're designed for shotguns and rifles, and they're not too light, so I'm thinking they'd do OK with two frypans.

Thanks for any more info you have.

Guys,

Thanks for all the suggestions. I did end up buying the aluminum gun case from eBay, but I'll look in to Fred Justice's cases in the future. That looks like really well-made stuff. I like to support the "steelers" on the forum when they're making things. Who would know better?
