Sister Rosetta Tharpe is a much overlooked early gospel/blues vocal and electric guitar powerhouse. She was a favorite of Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis, Johnny Cash, and Little Richard. The few samples of her live don't seem so revolutionary today, but do when you realize she was playing this style before almost anyone else, much less any women. She definitely helped create rock'n'roll. The main Philly paper just ran a feature on her, and there is a new biography of her out, "Shout, Sister, Shout!: The Untold Story of Rock-and-Roll Trailblazer Sister Rosetta Tharpe," by Gayle F. Wald. Tharpe was a gospel supestar in the '30s and '40s. She came from the sanctified Pentecostal tradition and played Carnegie Hall. She is buried in an unmarked grave in the North Philly ghetto. The book proceeds will be used to get her a proper tombstone. |

Hey, thanks for posting that!! I've been a fan of hers since I saw her in the movie "Ghost World." What a smoking guitar player and all-around performer. I have cd compilation of hers, and I would recommend her to any musician (or non-musician) I know.
