John is a good friend of mine. We have worked many gigs together. I was in Laramie Wyo in 77 at a Waylon concert. After the show was over, the band stayed on stage packing up.
I went up Ralph and had nice visit. I asked him if he knew John D. He said he was a good friend and that they worked the west coast together. He said he could tell me a lot of stories if he had the time. Some should be swept under the rug.  |

Thanks to all for the kind words about the "Mooney" style recording.
Dean, It's good to hear from you. I know you played a lot in Missouri, but I won't reveal how long ago that was...haha. I played lead and steel on that recording.
Mike, I record in my home and do not use an amp when I record. My only steel is a Marlen U-12 with a 5-tap Geo-L pickup. Normally I use a HI-Z tap for a full sound. On my Mooney styles, I use a lower impedance tap for the "tinny" sound. My recording chain is: Steel guitar-volume pedal-Lexicon MPX 100 for delay-audio preamp w/bass&treble controls-Peavey 16 ch mixer (w/EQ)-Fostex D-80 8 track digital recorder.
Also, to get a Mooney sound, I keep the gain down and pick harder than normal.
The lead guitar I use for most recording is an Ovation CS-257 acoustic/elec run through the same chain I use for the steel.
Bill, I'm glad Ralph didn't have time to tell all of his tall tales about me. You should only believe half of what a steel player tells you. Especially when it comes from a guy called "Moon".
For all who are interested, Ralph turned 78 last september and he will be playing at the Dallas show in March.

I like it a LOT John! That is exactly the kind of steel playing that fascinated me as a youngster and huge Buck Owens fan, struggling with my old Danelectro guitar and Magnatone amp back in the 60's. I wish my folks could've afforded to get me a PSG back then, but what the heck... I managed to learn enough on "Ol Dan" to lead an early life of sin and debauchery in the honky tonks of my misspent youth! LOL....

Dennis, I don't know how long you have lived in CA.
Sept 1961 to Feb 1962 I played steel guitar at Georges Roundup in Long Beach. The first 30 minutes, each night, was broadcast live on KFOX. The name I used then, was Johnny Dee. I played a Fender 400 at that time.
Did you know Jerry "Jay" McDonald who played steel for Buck? Jay used to come down from Bakersfield on sunday nights to visit with me at the Roundup.
