I need some help and/or advice relative to the tuning machines on a Fender D-8 I'm trying to make ready for a brand new steeler. His brother had the guitar and shipped it to me to make ready for playing. The tuning machine gears are made of copper or some soft material and are shot. The cogs have been rounded off on everyone of them. Will I have to replace the tuning pans completely or can I just replace the cog gears. If so where can I get parts to do so. Thanks in advance.

Fred,
Can you slide the tuners out when you remove the pan? If you can, I have heard of those tuners being replaced with mandolin tuners. There might be some slight modification involved. I've never done it, so I can't say for sure. |

Bob, no they are soldered to the pan itself. It's gonna be a mess I'm sure. I think if I could just obtain the gears themselves I could change them out. The worm gears seem to be ok. Thanks.

I replaced one last year with a kluson I bought. Some pans are slotted. As mine wasn't, I took the new tuner apart and put it back together in the pan so I didn't have to cut a slot. I soldered it in place with a HD iron. The pan fits tight so once the string is on, the tuner isn't going anywhere. Hope this helps. I have an extra tuner if you need one. You can take them apart to make it bass or treble side.

Fred, I've had some luck going around to music stores and asking them to let you paw through their spare tuner parts, they've taken a million tuners off as they replaced them over the years. Finding 16 correctly sized gears may be a bit much to hope for though.
