A friend gave me a CD from a group called the Hi Flyers. I don't know much about them, but they were a kinda country/jazz group from the 1930's. It's all really good, but the electric guitar player is just great. He sometimes sounds like the young Hank Garland. Can anybody tell me who this guy was? Thanks.

They were a classic Western Swing group that unfortunately did not do a whole lot of recording.

Sheldon Bennett, fiddle & electric guitar
Billy Briggs or Andy Schroeder, steel
Buster Ferguson, acoustic guitar
Dick Reinhart, bass

All of those guys recorded with other swing bands of the 30s and 40s. Bennett most notably with Hank Penny.

I got to see Sheldon sit in with Dave Stogner and Joe Holley in Santa Cruz CA about 25 years ago. Stogner was a major fan of both the Hi-Flyers and Milton Brown.

You can buy Sheldon's only LP, in CD form, here:

While you are at it, buy the Whippoorwills CD for the equally tasty Roy Lanham and Dusty Dalton on guitar and mandolin.

Both LPs very rare and this is your only way to get them on CD. Both LPs recorded circa 1960.

That Sheldon Bennett album is great, I have the original LP. Very much like George Barnes, style and tone are much like his.

Sheldon Bennett also played with
Curly Chalker in The Ranch Hands
in Las Vegas in the '60's.
