Here is a tune my dad used to play around the house on his trumpet when I was a kid.
I can’t remember how the bridge went. If anyone out there does, maybe they can write it out.

When I first thought of doing this tune, I guessed it should be done with the E to Eb lever in for the B6th tuning, but that didn’t work well for me.
Then I tried it off the D string with A&B Pedals held down and it was very easy there.

Hi Doug,
Maybe not wrong, maybe I just don't remember it well.
Also I had only heard it on trumpet before.
It does not sound the same on vibes.
But I'll play around with it.

I think that tune was popular about the time of WW2 or maybe before in the 30's...

Thanks for the help

"I can't get started" was a huge hit for trumpeter Bunny Berigan. Berigan was in the trumpet section of the Benny Goodman band before Harry James, but this tune was a hit for him while he had his own band.

It's usually played in Bb, but of course you can play it wherever you like. In Bb, the bridge goes like this:

|D- |G7 |C | |
|C- |F7 |Bb Bbo|C- F7|

In your key of G, it would be:

|B- |E7 |A | |
|A- |D7 |G Go |A- D7|

By the way, if the section you've posted would be considered the "A" part, the form is AABA

I know this chord progression doesn't explain the melody for the bridge, but I hope it helps.

Yes I did try it in Bb, but on the E9th tuning it sounded too high for my ears.
I wanted a little bass in the lower notes.

I think it could be played in the same fingering on a C6th neck and come out in a lower Bb if played off the F string & no pedals?
20 years since I had a C6th neck.

I knew it was a AABA standard, but didn't remember the words after what I wrote.

Doug Seymore sent me some music for the song... Thank you again Doug. I don't sight read, but can struggle through it.

Anyway, do you agree that it's a nice song for the steel?

My brother reminded me that this song is played in the movie soundtrack for Chinatown too.

Bunny Berigan, Yes I remember that he was one of the guys my dad liked some place down the line from Armstrong, Dizzy and Miles....
