The Polynesian Village at Walt Disney World was an annual destination ... every Dec. for me and my family.

Y'all might remember the little "scene" under the staircase in the lobby ... near the dress shops ... based on the 1937 cartoon short Hawaiian Holiday ...

I would stand there watchin' Mickey play Kaulana o Hilo Hanakahi ... till my mom would drag me away ...

I took my babies down last winter for their first Polynesian visit and was saddened to see that they removed the "scene" ...

I do have two pretty cool versions of this tune to remind me of those days ....

Here's Sol Hoopii ...

Here's Jerry Byrd ...

Every time I hear this song ... I fell like a little kid again ...

Always one of my favorite Hawaiian steel tunes.

A totally bizarre tune though. To my ears it sounds like two songs glued together. The bridge has nothing to do with the verse, and vice versa.

The verse is very melodic and bridge is completely geometric .

I always fantasized that the bridge was an afterthought and created on the fly for the original recording of the tune. They needed something to bridge the verses to keep the song from being too repetitive.

It's always fun to go to Hawaiian steel guitar conventions and watch the pick-up bands try to do the walk down on the bridge to the abrupt STOP. It's never in synch. The walk-up is fine, but you can sense a feeling of panic coming from the stage as those chords start to descend.

Does anyone know the history of this tune?

I think Lena Machado wrote it ...

I too ... was "taken a-back" by that middle section the first time I heard the complete song ...

Mickey only played the verse ...

It's obvious that Mickey only played the verse. Look how calm he appears!

Lena Machado wrote this song.
It talks about the beauty of Hilo's famous landmarks.

Did you notice that Mickey is doing a modified Hawaiian "Shaka sign" with his right hand?

Very clever of those Disney artists (who are now unemployed).

Sol Hoopii is freakish-ly stunning as he "controls the Mouse's hands" ...

Sure worth the price ... of the whole DVD.

I've never tried playing steel with piano accompaniment. I wonder if that opens up a bunch of intonation issues since the piano is equal tempered.

Is that Sol singing? Man, he's sure making "any-kine" with the words. Yikes.

(edited: whoops, got just and equal reversed)

That is Sol singing ... literally weeks before his death.

Thats off a compilation of mostly evangelical shows and home recordings.

Sol's blind here ... and the host of the show (Bud Tutmarc) makes a plea for donations to help pay Sol's rent.

The dialog is just too sad to listen to ...

As far as the piano goes ... my philosophy is ...

Even if the accompaniment is the ultimate in "Equal Temperament" ... the piano ...

A Just-Tuned instrument will only "sweeten" the mix.

The thirds, sixths, dominant & major sevenths of the piano are so "transient" ...

Their clash with their own root and your Just-Tuned Steel guitar ... is no biggie ...

Unlike the third of your frypan clashing with its own root ... if you were to tune ET

Here are the sets ... if you are a Sol fan ... these are certainly well worth it.

I bought them both years ago as cassette's ...

Private Collection

Religious Recordings

They are all electric ... not very much "hot jazz" ... but some real pretty playin' ...

Seems he turned alot of "Hawaiian songs" into gospel tunes ... changing the words.

Check out his version of Indian Love Call ...

This is from a set of home recordings cut by Bud's dad Paul ... in their living room ...

After hearing this particular version ... Indian Love Call became my "signature song" ...

I hope Marc Records doesn't mind me puttin' these two up ... this set is on Ebay all the time ... and like I said ... a good $30 cheaper than when I bought the cassettes.

Seems that he used C#m up till the end ...

I'm not very good at picking out tunin's and their variations off records ...

I play it in C6/A7 ...

Lots of folks here know Bud Tutmarc ... Sol's protege ...

I'm sure they can add stories about the "later days" of Sol Hoopii ....

I forgot to footnote that the clip of "Kaulana O Hilo Hanakahi" featuring Jerry Byrd on steel is of Danny Kua'ana and His Islanders.
