I think Lena Machado wrote it ...
I too ... was "taken a-back" by that middle section the first time I heard the complete song ...
Mickey only played the verse ... |

Lena Machado wrote this song.
It talks about the beauty of Hilo's famous landmarks. |

I'm tellin' y'all ... kids in the house or not ...
Its out on DVD now ... Hawaiian Holiday
Sol Hoopii is freakish-ly stunning as he "controls the Mouse's hands" ...
Sure worth the price ... of the whole DVD.

I've never tried playing steel with piano accompaniment. I wonder if that opens up a bunch of intonation issues since the piano is equal tempered.
Is that Sol singing? Man, he's sure making "any-kine" with the words. Yikes.

Here are the sets ... if you are a Sol fan ... these are certainly well worth it.
I bought them both years ago as cassette's ...
Private Collection
Religious Recordings
They are all electric ... not very much "hot jazz" ... but some real pretty playin' ...
Seems he turned alot of "Hawaiian songs" into gospel tunes ... changing the words.
Check out his version of Indian Love Call ...
This is from a set of home recordings cut by Bud's dad Paul ... in their living room ...
After hearing this particular version ... Indian Love Call became my "signature song" ...
I hope Marc Records doesn't mind me puttin' these two up ... this set is on Ebay all the time ... and like I said ... a good $30 cheaper than when I bought the cassettes.

Did I hear C#m on the Sol tune at the beginning of this thread Rick? Sounded like it.

Rick, this has probably been covered before, but what tuning did Sol use for Indian Love Call ? |

I forgot to footnote that the clip of "Kaulana O Hilo Hanakahi" featuring Jerry Byrd on steel is of Danny Kua'ana and His Islanders. |
