graphic eq as preamp

i thought i read somewhere were someone used a graphic eq in their rack as a preamp .did i dream this up or will it work?

Some people use(d) a Furman PQ-3 parametric EQ, but since most equalizers are line level devices, I don't believe they have enough gain to do well with a steel guitar (low level) pickup.
