does anyone know how to make decals?

I am building a few lap steels and would like to have them on my headstocks.

Here's a link I ran accross for making them with an ink jet printer. www.decal-paper.com
From what I can gather you print the picture out using an ink jet printer on this decal paper.
When I was a kid growing up I use to make my own for models. Back then the local arts & craft store sold a thing called "Decal It." Basically it was a clear polimar that you would spread in layers on the picture you wanted to make into a decal. When it was dry you would cut the picture out a little bit over size and then dip it in water and slide the decal off. Of course that was well over 40 years ago. You may want to try looking around in the hobby stores or the arts & craft stores as well.

About a year ago, Rick Aiello had a contact that made a small run of the Ricky 5 sides, 40s era, red/black on white.

I'd pick up a dozen if it ever happens again.
Any chance, Rick?

Randy, if you are only going to need one decal you can buy press-on lettering and borders in many styles at office supply stores. You can then press the lettering directly on the wood if you plan to have a clear finish on the wood and then spray or paint the clear finish coat over the decal.

If you are going to stain the body, do that first and then apply the press-on lettering and finally spray or paint the body with a clear gloss coat. The lettering comes in black or white.

If you want to have a decal that you can paste on the body after you have put the finish on it, you can take a piece of clear tape such as is used for packages and paste it to the slick paper that postage stamps come on (after the postage stamps have been used, of course). Next press on the lettering that you want on this layer of tape and then put another strip of the clear tape over the lettering. Cut the decal to size and strip off the back slick stamp paper. Then you have the original tape sticky side exposed and you can stick it in place on the body.

Even a yet easier way is to select a lettering font on your computer that you find attractive (Fender used the "Brush Script" syle) and then design and type the decal and save it to a file. Buy some clear label paper at Staples, etc. that will print on your computer and print out the decal. Be careful to buy clear labels; some that you think are clear will actually be "snowy" when you remove them from the backing and stick them to the guitar body. This computer approach is especailly good if you want to make several decals, model names, etc.

Ron ... the guy who was transforming a Model NS into a Silver Hawaiian ... ran those ... using the decal paper (or something similar) as linked to above.

For my Dustpans ... I experimented alot ... and then found this ...

Vinyl Bumber Stickers.

The vinyl paper at OfficeMax, et al ... was "removable" ...

This stuff I linked to ... is permanent.

Great absorption of color and a clear coat over it protects it from scratches.

The downside of this stuff ... its white ... so your decal must be full print ..

And vinyl reacts with nitrocellulose lacquer ... so these won't be good for a lacqured guitar.

Just tryin' to help ...
