I have Jay Dee coming into my Studio Tomorrow. I need to know what gear he usually uses to Record with. I know a Royer 121 is a great steel microphone but I don't have one. Anyone have any microphone suggestions.Any other help would be helpful.
Thanks from Bakersfield.

Try an SM58 or 57, one of the best for Steel Guitar.

I've recorded JayDee dozens of times and tell him hi for me. He'll probably bring an amp but is usually OK to go direct if you want to do that. I usually do both and print on 2 tracks. Mic his amp halfway between the center of the speaker cone and the edge of the speaker with an above average dynamic mic like a Sennheiser 421 or 441 set to full range. A Shure 57 or 58 will do nicely though.Make sure to use a high end preamp cause that'll make a helluva lot more difference than which mic you use. Mr. Maness plays very evenly but you might want to take your most transparent compressor and set it to catch only the peaks and knock them down about 2-5 db with a fast attack and release time and about a 4:1 ratio. I always set him up in the control room so we can communicate as we go - it's much easier than using talkback thru headphones and then of course put the amp in an iso room. Don't print with reverb cause you may want to fine tune that later but let him hear some in the control room monitors as he plays. Do these things my brother and all will go well.... |

I am doing a CD project for Bobby Durhanm. He is a close friend with Jay Dee. I am really nervous. I do have a great Engineer Ann thomas. She is really good. I will let you know how it goes.
