This has probably been discussed....but new to me. Been playin my p/p thru a Nash 112 ever since they came out. Mine re-placed my ses 500 of 20 yrs. Now I got a FSK for Xmas. and my Bandleader says its crap. He makes me play out of the peavey, and my wife ( who does the mixing when we play) agrees. The FSK sounds great in the living room when I practice.....better than the peavey, so now I don't what to think. I double on strat, and don't want to carry two amps to gigs. The Strat really does sound like crap thru the FSK. Confused in Wisconsin!

Jory they say the FSK takes a bit for the speaker to break in. The one I heard at the store wasn't bad though. Besides, what do bandleaders know about steel guitar anyway? Aren't they the next step above soundmen?

I've found that for me to get a good sound out of either one of my FSK's I replaced the speakers in each one with the Peavey 1501BW's. Amps are lighter w/1501's and tone is much improved. The 1501's, a Hilton volume pedal and a little reverb on the FSK is all I use. I also use nothing but humbucker p/u's on my guitars.

Are you sure the FSK is in good working order? I have a Webb and an FSK and the guys in my band prefer the sound of the FSK!

That seems strange to me, I use my N112 on the job, because we run everything thru the system so volume has never been a problem and it sounds great. When I go to a steel show I've been taking my FSK, it sounds terrific. I haven't tried it with my strat or L.P. When I had to play steel and six string both for many years I used a Vegas 400, with two channels, that was the perfect solution for me.

Jory, I've been using the FSK for a year and a half, and it's the best tone I've ever had. Like you, I play an old Emmons p/p. The amp Settings are critical. The settings are Not like Peavey settings. The following works for me:

normal switch OUT
GAIN 12:00
EQ TILT 10:00
TREBLE 9:00 (backed off considerably)
MID LEVEL 1:00
MID FREQ 1:00
BASS 1:00
REVERB 10:00 (or to taste)
MASTER 11:00 or 12:00
Limiter IN

It’s important to keep the GAIN no lower that 10:00 IMHO. Also, keep the limiter IN to prevent any break up. The GAIN is fairly cranked, which produces a warmer sound, but you’ll get some breakup unless the LIMITER switch is IN.

I also play a telecaster on a lot of gigs, and I learned a long time ago that TWO AMPS is the way to go. Using one amp for both guitar and steel means that your guitar tone will suffer, or your steel tone will suffer. I use a '67 Fender Vibrolux Reverb for guitar and the Steel King for PSG. In my opinion, guitars sound terrible through steel amps, and steels sound terrible through guitar amps. Get yourself a 40-60 watt tube amp for guitar. It's worth hauling to the gig!

I had a Webb 6-14-E, a Peavey Nashville 112 and a FSK side by side for 6 months here. The Webb and the FSK were both great, with almost tube-like warm tone. The Webb had smoother and deeper reverb, the FSK had more intuitive tone controls and neat casters and was a tad more compact. Certainly FSK won on cost, you can buy a pair of these and have money left over for the cost of one Webb. The Webb has got to be the coolest looking amp on this planet though.

Even after break-in, the Nashville 112 lacked warmth and had a very sterile tone. It's hard not to like a low cost super light and compact amp but for me it just didn't come close to being usable. I have heard others play through the Nashville at shows and I didn't like the sound they were getting either. This may be a moot point if you are mic'ed through a PA system.

The Webb and Nashville are gone and the FSK remains.

Regarding the original post... comparing a Nashville 112 to a Fender Steel King. They are completely different amps. The 112 is 80 watts w/12" speaker, and it was designed for the "home player". The FSG is 200 watts w/15" speaker, larger cabinet. The tone and the performance is totally different. It's like comparing apples and oranges.

I've had my FSK for close to a year now. Never played it out except for rehearsal and my steel player, Ron Kirby, says he likes it better than my Bassman with my tele. I'm also contemplating a 1501-4 change, but I like the sound I'm gettin now. I sometimes use the RV3 with it with a mix of reverb and delay. I like it!

See...thats the thing. We Mic everthing in our Band. Our PA is big.....7000W of Crown power....into dual 12 + horn JBLs w/ 18" subs....Awesome sound, so my N112 always sounded good. I did not get the FSK because I was unhappy with my sound...Just wanted to try one because my p/p souded so good out of other fender amps I have tried, for fun. If I have to lose $$$$ on it to sell it now...I won't sell it just yet! ( Its so nice and shiney!!!!!!!) Prob have to start playing out of it and get a 112 Valveking to play guitar out of!!!!

Hi Jory, I tried the Tele through the Steel King but the 6 string sounded terrible with the psg settings. However with a few knob turns I was able to get a nice warm tone out of the FSK for 6 string but obviously this would not work for a working band situation. Sometimes I have only seconds to switch from Steel to Tele, no time for twisting knobs. So I carry two amps. One for steel, one for Tele.

As far a just the steel amp, another thing you might want to consider is putting a Peavey 1501-4 Black Widow in the FSK. Mine sounded awesome before but the new 1501 really brought the Steel King to life.

when i got my FSK I immediatly put a real JBL in it. a K series since the D would blow, and it made a big difference to me.
if you have to have power that seems to be the answer to me and get a processor for the strat.
or if you don't need the power stay with what works.
but I never was hot on that JBL re-do, i'm sure others will pound for that, again just imho.
