I have a Marlen S-10 and have never studied a well set up steel so here is the basic question. Should all three pedals be the same height and have the same travel even if the are doing different pulls? My C pedal seems to have a lot more travel than the others.
Thanks

It doesn't make much difference at what height the pedals start out at, what's important is that when they are stomped down, the change is on pitch with your normal foot position. You shouldn't have to tip your foot out of normal position in order to make the pitch changes.
Also, when rocking off the A pedal onto the B, you want to be clear of it altogether. This might take some additional adjustment. |

Bill,
I set my ABC pedals so they bottom out at the same spot. I think its just a matter of personal preference. I'm not familiar with how Marlins are set up so I don't know if the longer throw is nessisary or not. I do know many steels do have a slightly longer throw on the C pedal so that it doesn't feel too stiff. _________________ Bob |

Personal preference. But for me I like to have my A and C pedals just a bit higher than my B pedal for two reason:
1) It allows me to feel my pedal positions knowing wear my foot is in relation to the pedals.
2) It also allows me not to have to contort my ankle at odd angles.
Again this is all personal preference, but for me this works. |

Some older marlens are pull/release. I have a guitar like that. The C pedal can be difficult to set up because the C pedal pulls the E string and there has to be slack for the E lower lever and that makes the travel of the C pedal Long. The A pedal doesn't have to have that extra slack so it has less travel. I have to set the initial C pedal hight way up there just to get the B and C to end up at the same spot. I have no idea how to get it to work without doing this. It looks funny having the C pedal sticking up like that but I can't figure out how to not do it that way. Maybe some one else can set me staight. I have also found that the only way to tune both pulls on the C pedal is to set the crank to the right spot so that both pulls are in tune when I set the pedal travel.
