Bobby's live performance of 'Hula Blues' is part of a live slack key gig recorded last year on Maui for this CD, Legends of Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar.
It was the 3rd year in a row that slack key has taken the crown, much to the chagrin of some other local performers, such as those who favor chanting. (good luck next time...)
Why they put a steel cut on a SK CD is a minor mystery, and Bobby said that there were much better slower tunes to pick from, but you gotta figure, this should make his future even more eventful. |

Bobby's slower tunes are what really tell how good he is.
Even though I know him well, and he was at our house a few years ago, he surprises me all the time with what he does and what he comes up with, right from the heart, just like he says.

My brother in law gave me that CD for my Birthday. It was the soundtrack while we drove around Oahu last month. Glad to see others are discovering it!
An old friend of mine from Tucson was nominated in the NEw Age catagory. Didn't win though.
What artist has won more Grammys in more catagories then anyone else? (Hint: He plays banjo!) |

The CD is a compilation of live recordings from a weekly concert series at the Ritz-Carlton on Maui. It's mostly slack key but they occasionally feature steel guitar.
George Kahumoku and the others who run the series are sincere in their desire to present some real Hawaiian culture. There was really nothing like it when they took a chance and started the series a few years ago. It's nice to see them get some recognition. Information about the concert series is here: www.slackkey.com
Anyone who visits Maui and enjoys music should check it out - good music that's authentically Hawaiian presented in an intimate setting.
BTW, here's another, slightly longer article about the Grammy winning album: Honolulu Advertiser article. |

If you like slack key, on Sunday evenings in Waikiki at the Mariot you can hear the group with Aaron Mahi ,on bass, Martin Pahinui, and George Kuo on slack key. George is a GOOD slack key player. |

Not Roy Clark. Good try. I'll take a few more guesses before I reveal the artist. |

I can't say enough about Bobby......I spent a few days with him at the City Folk Festival along with Rick Aiello, Doug Smith, & Barbara Kunz this past July.......
Bobby is always ready to play, always has beautiful tone (regardles of what he's playing) and plays any tuning that is put in front of him......a very nice person, and very modest about his talent and abilities..... |

Bobby usually sits in with George and the gang on Sunday evenings, so you get the best of both worlds. |
