Saw Jimmy Webb in concert (solo) this past weekend.
What a titan; he played all the "hits" and then some with great passion and aplomb, he's a real raconteur and a friendly guy to boot
Get his album "Ten Easy Pieces", mostly just Jimmy solo piano and vocals, some strings and an oboe here and there, plus a bonus of tasty guitar courtesty forumite Dean Parks on "Wichita Lineman" and Canada's own Steve Smith plays steel on "By the Time I Get to Phoenix". _________________ Head full of this kaleidoscope of brain-freight, Heart full of something simple and slow

Greg,
Have you read his book, Tunesmith? It's a great read, for songwriters in particular. He sure knows his theory, and the music business, inside out. _________________ Jackson Steel Guitars

I should pick up that Webb album and the book.
What a phenomenal songwriter. What a gift he has. If the only song he ever wrote was "Wichita Lineman," that would have been enough. I think it's one of the greatest songs of all time. Great lyrics, wonderful melody, cool chord changes.
I have about a half dozen versions of that song on iTunes in my computer. Including an instrumental version by Buddy Emmons from "Suite Steel." Buddy really gets his arms around the tune. Just beautiful.
I just looked at his website, and Jimmy Webb doesn't have anything scheduled for Northern California at this time, but I'm going to keep checking. _________________ Mark |

My favorite Webb song must be "The Moon's a Harsh Mistress". That song kills me every time I hear it.....

Don't forget BE's early rendition of WL, on (I think) the old "Suite Steel" LP--as sweet today as it was when I first heard it 30 years ago!
30 years? Good God almighty! |
