From a local craigslist ad, forwarded to me by a popular local "promoter"...
Maybe even for a band with two or three steel players..(Steel player content.)

This is a cute little classy espresso bar with great sandwiches and pastries and deserts. It is not just a espresso shop it is in transition of Restaurant/music/beer and wine. It is small but cute and great location. Pictured Windows Classic Rock Band bought the place Dec 1st and will be playing live Jan 20th Saturday Night from 7 pm to 10 pm. for the kick off OPEN HOUSE/GRAND OPENING where tons of people are expected to turn out for the grand opening/open house. ( KIDS WELCOME) Positively Entertainment will be out and Lots of give a way’s, prizes, fun & games. Soon will be installed a full grill for extended menu and soon Beer and Wine.
We are looking for bands to come in and play Friday or Saturday nights from 7 pm to 10 pm. For now until we build up customer base, what we can offer for gratuity is espresso related drinks, sodas and our famous sandwiches and a desert for the bands. In the future as customer base builds we will be working out a fair pay structure for the musicians in addition to feeding them and some drinks. We will do our best to advertise you on the nights you play, but also we would like your efforts to bring in some of your fans and advertise yourself as well.
Obviously if you pack the house, we will work out some type of gratuity toward you. We are on the ground floor of building this place to yet another great place for musicians to show there stuff and get there name out. This is a great opportunity to get in on ground floor with a local band that bought there own place. Positively Entertainment will be out at the place On Jan 20th when Pictured Windows Plays and will do a write up on the place and the band. We will advertise bands playing at our place through there paper.
Ok, here is how it works:
The place is small, so we would like max of 3 to 4 piece bands, with basic equipment. Don’t need huge speakers or large double stack marshal amps. Not necessary as the place has limited room and the acoustics are fantastic. You can bring them but might be over kill. It was built with consideration of music. So, basic amps and speakers will do fine for this small spot.
The kind of music for this neighborhood has been researched and this is the kind of music we want based on neighborhood survey.
Classic Rock, Jazz, Blues, Country, Light Rock, 4 piece bands are ok, as long as minimal equipment for room. Acoustic teams or sole artist are ok as well. Or even consider light back ground music that has nice sounds. We are looking for bands or solo artist to play from 7 pm to 10 pm with of course a few breaks in there. At this time not looking for rap, heavy metal, or punk. And for now not looking for DJ’S or spinning CD’S.
If you are a musician ( solo or band) we prefer you to stop by with a demo for best consideration and we can meet each other. Also if you are on myspace or have a website for reading about you and listening to your material is also a plus. Now I realize we are not paying $$ at this time, but soon will and we will feed the band, drinks and deserts ( no alcohol yet) but it is a way to get your foot in the door as we will prioritize bands that started with us and keep them coming back as we grow. We don’t forget people that help us grow. We also will advertise your band as well as we expect you to help get friends and fans out on the night you perform also.
We are not dumb, if you pack the house and people are buying stuff, we WILL kick in some. We have Friday and Saturday nights open for bookings Starting January 26th. |
More like Nashville all the time here in Big Poodle...
We could get together and have a Benefit Party for them after they give enough local bands their "support"...

I love it - "We are not dumb."
Clearly - if they can get good musicians to play their commercial (not benefit) gig for free, they're obviously "not dumb". |

If they were giving away free booze, they'd have musicians lined up around the block begging to play - I am like, so-oo fond of solo drummer concertos.... |

I'm seeing this thing happen more often now. It's these Expresso/sandwich shops that don't serve beer or drinks mostly. They get these teen bands together or bands that don't have a place to play to come in and play free. One I know of tells the band members it's going to be a big extravaganza advertised on the internet and make it seem like a big deal when it's just a local thing that no-one knows about but just a few bands. They come in and play very loud. The kids scream even louder than the band and they think they're doing something. The restaurant gets a cover charge and sells coffee and sandwiches and get free entertainment. What a deal! They made a deal with one band to split the cover charge with them and then they charged less than they told them and they each got $7 each! It's just a game is all. |

Dear local establishment,
We are looking for restaurants/sandwich shops/wine bars to feed us Friday or Saturday nights from 7 pm to 10 pm. For now until we build up reflux, what we can offer for gratuity is kudos, a pat on the back, and the classic approval of a well-timed belch. In the future as our fame builds we will be working out a fair pay structure for the cooks in addition to providing karaoke and the occasional sing-along. (Kumbaya, my friend!) We will do our best to advertise you on the nights you feed us, but also we would like your efforts to bring in some food from other places and feed yourself as well.
Obviously if you pack our guts, we will work out some type of gratuity toward you. We are on the ground floor of building our appetites to yet another great place for cooks to show there stuff and get there name out. This is a great opportunity to get in on ground floor with a local band that eats nationally. Rachel Ray will be out at our place On Jan 20th when Ed Bob Gomez cooks and will do a puff piece on the food and our eatin' skills. We will advertise restaurants feeding us through word of mouth and a trail of methane.
Ok, here is how it works:
We eat a lot, so we would like min of 3 to 4 courses each, with basic spices. Don’t need gourmet sauces or none of that froo-froo French crap. Not necessary as our tastes have been blunted by years of eatin' Jalapenos for breakfast. You can bring them but we'll probably just use them to feed the dogs. Our group was formed with consideration of calories. So, basic TexMex or Eye-talian will do fine for our big guts.
This kind of food for guys like us has been researched and this is the kind of food we want based on group survey.
Steak, potatoes, and salad are ok, as long as the meat is grilled. Bacon or other fatty meats are ok as well. Or even stuffed poblanos but only if they is fresh because we're from Texas and we'll know if they ain't. Just sayin'. We are looking for restaurants or solo chefs to feed us from 7 pm to 10 pm with of course a few breaks in there for Budweiser to cleanse our palates. At this time not looking for sushi, kim chee, or balutes. And for now not looking for vegan or organic.
If you are a chef (solo or with restaurant) we prefer you to send us a free sample for best consideration and maybe then we can meet each other. Also if you are on myspace or have a FedEx account we can bill to for ordering samples is also a plus. Now I realize we are not paying $$ at this time, but soon will and we will send a cassette of our group (no CD yet) but it is a way to get your food in our stomachs as we will prioritize restaurants that started with us and keep them coming back as we grow fatter. We don’t forget people that help us grow fatter. We also will talk up your restaurant as well as we expect you to bring waitresses (especially those with a big front porch if you know what we mean) and bus boys out on the night you feed us also.
We are not ignernt, if you pack our bellies and the farts is flyin', we WILL pick some for ya but maybe only on acoustic geetar as we don't like to carry our gear too far. We have Friday and Saturday nights open for bookings Starting January 26th.
Waiting to hear from ya,
The High Colonics |

I figure if you take an average weight of 170 lbs. for both men and women, a "ton of people" is only 11.7647 folks.
We had a ton of people turn out for a show, once... |

Now hold on! Sometimes this kind of thing isn't too bad. About 5 years ago a couple of us started taking a couple of guitars to Hardee's (Carl's Jr. on the West Coast) hamburger joint to pick a couple of tunes for some old folks. Well it got to where the crowd got bigger and bigger with people of all ages coming by. We started passing the hat and doing a 50/50 drawing and all in in a short time were making $50 to $60 bucks apiece with a 5 member band. We do it every Thursday night at different locations with an occasional other night. Tommorrow night (Friday) I'll be on steel at the Hardee's in Portsmouth from 7 to 9 PM. We only do two hours at any of the locations with a 20 minute break right in the middle. These are some of the most fun places to play I've ever been involved in and will continue to do them. It's a nice family atmosphere without any barroom smoke or any of that crap. I still play most weekends with other bands and do a regular Saturday night gig in a joint in Suffolk but I like the hamburger gig better than any of 'em. You'd be surprised how the crowd grows and how much they really appreciate what you do. Hell, I even get to play instrumentals and what's more the crowd seems to like 'em............JH in Va. _________________ Don't matter who's in Austin (or anywhere else) Ralph Mooney is still the king!!! |

And who opened for them..
Guess I'll call around to the usual suspects..
Maybe Positively Entertainment was there to do a review. I'll check online..

I do gigs like that regularly if the players are good and I like the place. I find myself having quite a bit of fun with some amazing musicians. Gigs like that can be great places to work out new ideas. One night I'm a rock star at some concert hall and the next night I'm at Sunny's bar playing for drinks. Some gigs pay and some don't. The Sunny's gig sure is a fun one though.
The cafe scene is one of the only places left for young musicians to learn there craft. Some kids are out there having fun playing live music with there friends and some guy is home alone typing snotty judgements about them on the internet. You guess who I would rather be. _________________ Bob |

when we had our first REAL band when we were early teens we played anywhere they would have us..This is how we built our ego's ! And this is how I showed off my Gretsch Tennessean.
Although I doubt our band would do this now but this is really not a bad thing for the newcomers to the gig world. It could give some new players some experience and exposure.
At least the guy is honest..he's giving away food...
Will Play for Food becomes reality !
IF our band really wanted to do something like this once in a while, I would do it, as long as there were people around. Sometimes these things are great fun.

I agree with Bob and Tony. I think everyone here has played gigs for which they were not financially compensated at one time or another. So what? The best musicians I know are the musicians who feel compelled to play, who -have- to play, and who of course -want- to play, regardless of what kind of money they make. For folks who need the practice (LIKE ME) and who like playing music for the sake of playing music, ain't nothing wrong with it. Bob is one of the few full time musicians on this forum, but it sounds like dollars are only one variable he considers when taking a gig in a world that is certainly not that easy on professional steel players.
The guy actually sounds like a decent fellow to me--give him the benefit of the doubt. Hell, at least you get fed! I played stubb's bar-b-que in austin every wednesday happy hour for two years just for a square meal of ribs once a week! The tips were okay, but that ain't why I was there!
