What "new update"? The I.E.7 browser has been out for several months now, but I don't recall any updates? |

Jack;
I think there was a critical update to IE 7 this month and I believe it was pushed via automatic Windows updates, as well as by manual Microsoft updates. I haven't seen any problems because of the security update, yet.
Garry. If you experienced problems with IE 7 after getting a patch, please let us know the nature of the problems. _________________ "Wiz" Feinberg, Moderator SGF Computers Forum

I downloaded the BETA version of IE7 and immediately uninstalled it cuz it slowed my computer down big time and I hear that it's loaded with spyware and internet tracking software as is Windows latest Media Player..... |

You hear some strange things Tony. IE 7 does not contain spyware. Neither has it slowed any system I have upgraded to IE 7. Perhaps you should try the final version before making your final decision about it.
Most folks here know that I browse with Firefox, primarily, but I do use IE 7 on occasion, sometimes to compare the same online web page between browsers, and I find that IE 7 is faster than Firefox. _________________ "Wiz" Feinberg, Moderator SGF Computers Forum

The problem I'm having wt IE 7 is discussed in the Steel Players section where the new version won't open up Jay Dee's website fully. I get the opening page photo and some music but the links and graphics don't show up.

I can access Jay's site without problems, with I.E.7
If you are having problems its not I.E.7, but some other application or security software that is causing it. |

So, do you think my problem would be the Norton AntiVirus 2007 that came installed on my new computer? |

Twice I installed IE7 and both times it completely "locked up" my computer....and twice I had to uninstall it to regain control of my computer. _________________ "FROM THEN TIL' NOW" |

Gene, how much memory do you have? and do you have all the latest Win XP updates?
If you don't have at least 512MB of memory that may be your problem. Many new PC's were sold with only 256Mb of memory and that's really insufficient for XP, which is a memory hog. |

Jack, thanks for your reply.
I do have 512 MB RAM. I tried the installation in December and again in January and both times have had to "uninstall" before I could restore my computer to a usable condition. The "system restore to a previous date and time" would not undo the IE7 problem. _________________ "FROM THEN TIL' NOW" |

IE7 doesn't like 3rd party browser extensions. It doesn't like Google toolbar for example. If you go to Tools/Internet Options/Advanced and uncheck Enable 3rd Party browser Extensions, that can/might make IE7 work. On my computer I had 2 users without that checked, and 1 with it checked. I couldn't get the 1 user to operate properly until I unchecked it. Everything works great now. In reading about this, that was a problem for a lot of people. |

J & J thx 4 th tips, when i tried IE7 much of the text on pages was blurry (it had ghost images) so i uninstalled it for the moment. One question; i have a program (unrelated to a browser) that starts everytime i start the computer. I have emptied every 'startup' folder i can find but no change (i'm using windows XP Media version). On windows 98 there was a list of startup programs that could be checked or unchecked to run at bootup at: /start/programs/accessories/system tools/system information/tools menu/system configuration utility/startup tab, i cant find a similar list here on XP. Any way to set this to not run at startup?
edit: i located the ram capacity ok *

Yes, there is a utility in Windows XP known as Msconfig that will let you choose which programs may or may not startup when you enter the Windows Desktop (Explorer.exe). To use it go to Start > Run and type in MSCONFIG then press Enter. The system configuration box will open. On the Startup tab you can uncheck items you want to test for problems and reboot. They should not run on your next startup. Do this until things improve with your perfomance. When you are done let us know which startup program was causing your problems.
Note that if a Spyware, Adware, Backdoor or Trojan Horse program or a virus is causing your problem, unchecking it from starting up may not be enough to prevent it from running on the next reboot. Much of today's malware is able to survive registry edits and reassert itself. I(n this event you will need to scan for threats with a modern, up to date spyware/malware scanner and an anti virus program. _________________ "Wiz" Feinberg, Moderator SGF Computers Forum

Wiz, in Win98 when you uncheck a startup program (in the sys con utility), it simply restarted without that program starting, while in XP it seems that no matter what item you uncheck, upon restart the Configuration Utility comes up in 'diagnostic mode and will only restart normally when all the items are checked again. So i had to leave it the way it was originally. But thats ok, my main query was in locating the utility itself, but would be interested in any further feedback. Thx c
