Is there a good way to remove gold plating from old parts?

Noxon ( spelling ?) This is a chrome polish that warns that it is not to be used on Gold plating. I have used it to remove the gold plating on old gibson guitar parts. Gibson Gold plated over Nickel, so before they offered reissue parts in Nickel I would buy some old trashed gold parts from a music store junk box then buff them down to the Nickel with Noxon. Works great.

Papa Joe,

If noxon doesn't work, I think I'll just let one of these new punk-country guys play the heck out of it.

I use to mine placer gold in So. Eastern Az. Some where down near Ruby.

This is some neat science. If the plating is real gold you can submerse the piece in mercury and let the mercury disolve the gold. Once it is disolved you can then place the mercury into nitric acid and the gold will fall out of suspension. The gold can then be washed with a base solution and sold. The mercury can be brought out of the acid by placing aluminum into the acid.

This is extremely toxic and makes some nasty smoke that can sicken you, but if done right you will have a clean piece and the gold left over.
