I'm curious. Because of the lack of training materials for lap steel and the vast quantity for pedal steel, can anyone say whether a C6 pedal steel course would be at all usable for lap steel as well?

I would imagine it wouldnt work because of the pedal and lever raises and lowers.
perhaps to a degree when no raises or lowers are required.
I just ordered, from ebay, some DVD courses for lap steel.
one is for advanced blues and the other refers to C6.
I will have to wait for them to arrive to be sure if they could pertain to your question.

You could learn something from a C6th pedal course for sure, but mostly you'd get an idea of what you are missing in terms of chord voicings, etc.

Also, you'd need a 10 string lap steel to get all the strings...

The Joaquin book I did with Andy Volk is out of print at the moment- it's a great source for C6th non-pedal music. Mel Bay is considering reissuing it and a flood of emails to email@melbay.com could only help the cause!

Bill,

If you have a 6 or even 8 string lap steel tuned to C6th, the following book could be pretty useful to you:

(Mel Bay presents)
Basic C6th Nonpedal Lap Steel Method
by DeWitt Scott
$19.95

It's geared to the basic 6 string C6th tuning, low to high CEGACE, has a CD, gets into basics and presents both tab and music notation. It also gets into some technique: picks, bar, slants, harmonics, etc.

I play both lap and 10 string pedal steel and imho, the above book would be far more useful to you than a pedal steel course.

The above book is available at Scotty's Music (see the "LINKS" section) or a Mel Bay distributor. Hope this is helpful.
