I couldnt get the mike to work in my "Mike in," or my insturment in "Line in," when I plugged in there is a noise that comes and goes if I jiggle it. The computer would not recognize my Mixer either. So I couldnt record that way on the computer. It wouldn't work on the "Chat Room" either.

I went through all the computer tests and went online to HPackard and did every thing they said, still no luck. So It must be a short in the Sound Card where the line in is or mike in is. Any ideas out there? Otherwise I will have to take a trip to Best Buy. Thanks for any advice....al.SadSad

Al, if you are connecting an instrument or a regular P.A. type mic to the PC the output level of these devices are too low for the PC and you will only get very low levels, if anything. If you are using a mixer and amplifying the levels then it should work.

The Line In is stereo, the Mic input is mono (even tho it uses a stereo plug).

Depending on the "recording" program you are using will also depend on what you hear. e.g. with the Windows Sound Recorder, it will ONLY record from the Mic input, not the Line In.

You also should make sure you are using the correct plugs - 1/8" stereo (3.5mm).

As far as a "new sound card", if you have the integrated audio (on the motheboard) rather than a separate sound card, you would have to add a PCI sound card, if you have an open PCI slot, as the integrated audio can only be "replaced" with the complete motherboard. But, I suspect it's not the sound "card" that is causing the problems. If you are still under warranty, contact HP before spending any $$$ on anything -especially since it may not help, anyway.

Jack-Thanks for your help. You have always helped me in the past with your knowledge of this computer beast.

I have tried to contact HP as I have a one year warranty on this thing and I got it around May 06. I have checked thier website and followed their questions and answers, none seemd to apply to recording. They want to know if the sound works, and of course it does, it plays, etc. I just cant record.

Next week or so, when the weather is better, I'll drive over to BEst Buy and get whatever it is fixed. Maybe I should have bought a stand alone Recorder.
Thanks again, Jack. It is cold here now and snow finally in Michigan. I envy you in Florida....al.Smile
