Famed luthier supply store Stewart-MacDonald has a pretty good article on resonator guitar setup techniques that I didn't know about before. This may be helpful for some of you out there.

That's a very well-written procedure and good information. With all due respect to Stew-Mac, the only point I would take exception to is that the tallest possible bridge inserts will not always give the best sound. (Like any other instrument setup variable, one size doesn't fit all...) While it's true that it's not a bad place to start because you can lower them from there, on some guitars (especially ones that are loud and punchy to begin with) you can sacrifice "sweetness" and tonal complexity for sheer volume if the inserts are too tall.

Also worth mentioning, inserts of different wood species can be purchased nicely pre-slotted (and at a good nominal height, only requiring final thickness sanding) from a number of suppliers, and believe me, the extra $5 is well worth the savings in time and aggravation!
