Buddy, I seem to recall a while back you wanted to trade in the anti-dop Zum for the Hybrid after playing one. After having both a bit I was wondering what your current take is. Thanks |

Steven,
I have the same pickups (Lawrence) in both guitars so they are very similar in sound and perform equally well. Having said that, I’m leaning toward the all-pull Zum with its anti-drop mechanism, mostly because I’ve been spoiled by the counterforce feature of the Emmons Legrande I played for several years. Nothing is ever chiseled in stone for me but because the two Zums are great guitars for different reasons, I’m hoping I stay confused so Bruce will let me hang on to both for a while. |

Problem is neither of them will be worth much anymore 'cause all the notes will have been played right outta them~~ |

I imagine this has been discussed here before, but I couldn't find any info when I did a search. What exactly is a hybrid, and an anti-drop Zum? What are the cool features, and why can't the good features of each be combined? I have two Zums, the newest being @ 6 years old. Rather than bother Bruce with these questions, can somebody explain? |

Buddy,
Your tone in St. Louis was extraordinary. I can't imagine the Hybrid sounding any better under the hands of "Da Man". You say you have Lawrence pickups...can you tell us which ones? |

Well, I will try to explain, but I may not be totally 100% accurate.
The hybrid Zum has a changer which uses some properties of the push pull guitar. You tune the primary raises as you would a push pull.. Pedal down, tune at the tuning head, and then tune the open strings at the changer end.
Because of this type of changer the anti-drop system will not interface with this changer.
I am sure how the anti-drop system works. Wayne Smith has a Zum with that mechanism and perhaps he can chime in and explain how that system works.
FWIW, I have the hybrid and there are plenty of compensators on it for cabinet drop. The guitar stays in tune very well and to date, I have had no problems with the guitar at all.

E,
Your playing and tone on Prairie Home Companion, again knocked me out! Very rich and punchy. How do you do that? Can or would you tell us what amplification you employed? |

Tommy… You rascal you. I used a combination of the all-pull Zum, Rev preamp going into the power amp input of a Peavey 112, and a couple of 69 & 11/12 year old hands. I don't know how I do it. I just do it. |

Mark, would you explain that?
You're not thinking of lower return compensators which do nothing for cabinet drop?
The only thing I can think off. Some guys use extra pull rods to sharpen strings just a tad to compensate for cabinet drop. Strings 1 and 7 come to mind.I'm asking for the sake of education. Not trying to start a debate.....Thanks......bb |
