While playing a gig this Sat., I notices the bar "Dragging". It is like a lot of friction between a couple of the plain strings and the bar.
The strings are only a week old. Any ideas? _________________ 2005 Carter D-10,2009 Rains D-10, Session 500,Nashville 400,Nashville 112,1965 Vega Scruggs 5-String Banjo, Martin D-40, Gibson J-50 |

Wipe the strings with a blitz cloth. If that doesn't work, the strings could possibly have a defect. Change the culprits again. Jody. |

If you have a stainless steel bar, and stainless steel strings, there will be drag, or in engineering terms, galling. |

OK! I have a stange-question! If your plain strings are not Stainless, what else might they be? I have always used a Stainless Tone Bar, but; I normally use Nickel~Wound. Right now I happen to be using up some Stainless~Wound, but; I don't notice a problem there either! I have noticed a slight drag on plain strings in past years when perhaps my tone-bar needed polishing, but; only then! _________________ <marquee> Go~Daddy~Go, (No), Go, It's your Break Time</marquee> L8R, jb

Charles,
I believe the plain strings are all stainless. It's only the wound strings that vary depending on the composition of the winding. So if you're getting the drag on the plain strings, I'd suggest cleaning them, replacing them or polishing the bar!!

Plain strings (as well as the core of ALL wound strings) are always made from plain steel variety called "music wire", which is not a "stainless" steel. The windings (wrappings) may be regular music wire, nickel plated music wire, pure nickel, bronze, or stainless steel. (Or, in the case of piano strings, the wrappings are usually pure copper.) |

Several compositions of music wire, several coatings, and several processes like cryogenic, Isostatic pressing, compound the possibilities.
Rough bars will make a drag feel. The bar actually laps (polishes) the playing side of the strings. You don't see the resulting debris on a metal bar, but on the Zirc (white) you might with new strings. It wipes off. |

If you want to "slicken" up your strings try "Fast-Fret". You just rub it on your strings and wipe them off. It removes any gunk on them, brightens the sound and makes them slicker. Well worth the $4.99 selling price. |
