Topic: Just before the Forum started |

I started my web site in 1995. The Forum was born during the week after Christmas, 1996. There is no archive of the first few months of the Steel Guitar Forum, but here's what my web site looked like just before I added the forum to it:

b0b-Thank your for starting this Forum. It has been a great trip. I don't believe there is anything quite like it for most intruments.

Did you ever think that your little web site would grow to have over six thousand members? Is lt still as fun as it was back then? I bet from time to time you must feel like pulling your hair out  thanks for all you do for us!

I don't see how you have time to do it all. You work a day job, read threads on the forum and try to keep the peace on them. You deal with selling strings and CD's, plus you still have time to go play gigs and practice on your steel. Now get to work and quit reading this. Just kiddin'. Merry Christmas and a Happy 10 more years of The Forum.

Back in the late 80's or early 90's I started a small steel guitar group on Prodigy. That's where I met Herb Steiner. He finally convinced me to give it up and move over to AOL where Pezzyboy had started a steel guitar forum. That is where many of us met for the first time. Then this wonderful Forum took over and it exploded.
Thanks for putting up with us b0b. I don't know how you do it.

Right. I participated in the AOL steel forum for a while as QuasarBob. After I quit AOL, I started the SGF for steelers on the Internet. The AOL steel forum wasn't accessable from the Internet - it was for AOL members only.

Quite a coincidence b0b, the last few days I've been thinking it would be nice if you wrote a little history of how this got started, and what it was like at first. As everyone says, this is the best thing that's happened in years for steel guitar.

Bob - You have really come a long way, in not only making a truly great informative site that is shared with many folks that love what the steel guitar has done for music, but you have also made a world class web site. Thank you and those that have helped you along the way so that steel guitar/lap steel/dobro players have a place to go and fellowship.

I remember that web page!
My friend Brian was into computers and HAM radio. He was always talking about the information super highway. Big deal! He would send a message to a friend in another town as Packets and even did real-time messaging. I think they were called BBS. Anyhow, if I couldn't wrench on it, or cut it down with my chainsaw, what good was that? Then one night, I found your site and Brad's with all those 8 string tunings! Amazing with pictures and text. Suddenly the "internet" was making sence as a tool.
We didn't have any affordable internet provider in our area until '99, so I could only check out the SGF when visiting Brian's house.

It was the begining of 1999 I found the forum and the end of 99 when seperete modoraters came aboard.
I also came from the Ham Radio backround and did Packet, Aplink and traffic nets before I started working for the bus company in 1993. I could sence the world was getting closer with the internet.
It was August 1995 I first got on AOL with the high bills based on useage. I gavatated to country music chatrooms and message boards which influenced beyond what was Country FM radio. By 1997 I was making my mark and going to Austin as much as possable.
It's been the best years of my life getting to know the folks behind the music. |
