I have had a bunch of old BUDS... never had one do this.. at least not to this extent... Pops the 3rd about every 2 hours or less of playtime.. REAL bad..I even broke a 10th with this guitar!!!
NEVER broke one of those..
I have been at this for 30+years so I know what to look for... The Changer finger looks fine..smooth and clean.. Nut roller is fine too.. Strings are breaking at the changer anyway.. I always use a thin film of trans fluid under the string but it is not helping one bit.. This is a 2/1 changer.. Never had a Bud pop strings like this.. Its about to go to ebay..

Is this changer known as a string breaker??.. I have been using GeorgeL strings,.. Maybe they are no good, but I had a bunch so I am using them up.. One more thing.. the 3rd is forever flat no matter how much I tune.. within 10 minutes I have to tune the 3rd. when I am playing it.... at least until the string breaks in a little while, and then the new string keeps going a bit flat until it too breaks... I am about finished with buds, I love the sound and looks, but each of the 5 pro models I have owned has had some sort of aggravating and annoying glitch I had to work around.. I want to keep playing a bud,I really do, but each one of mine has been tempremental... It wears thin after a while.

My Carter demands nothing except to be played properly.. I never change the strings and they never break...

In any case, I am about at my wits end with this Bud... any ideas other than replacement???.. Bad bunch of strings maybe?? I had a few other brands on it besides the GeorgeL but none has lasted more than maybe 3-4 hours playtime.. any ideas???.. bob

Hey Bob, when I had my old 'bud it was a S-12 with the double raise, single lower changer. I was playing six nights a week and I never broke a string except on a rare occasion. I used to change my 3rd string every Sunday night on the last break as we were off on Mondays. On a rare occasion I'd break one sometimes on sunday nights but not very often. I'd change my 5th string every other week and my low B about once every month or two. I'd have to agree that it's probably a bad batch of strings as there's no logical reason why that changer would break a string more than another one....JH in Va.

I had that trouble on my '72 Shobud. I cut a piece of very thin leather as long as the knot and winding on the string. It didn't go over the top of the roller, just insulated the knot from the finger. It worked! I have no idea why, but it did!

wow.. interesting idea John... If it works for me I'll pass the info around....

Jerry, six gigs without popping a third??? .. man I'd be thrilled with 6 hours at this point... My Carter hasn't broken one in 6 months!!!

We'll see how John's idea works.... bob

Ya know what else might work, Bob. That Dr. Scholl's Moleskin stuff. It's sticky on one side. I had to be careful not to lose that little piece of leather cuz it wasn't glued down. Again, I have no idea why it worked!
