I'm thinking of getting a lower end used digital recorder...looking at a Fostex MR-8. I want something simple and easy to use. Maybe around $150 or so. I can dump audio into my PC, so the recorder will need to have either a flash card or USB connection. There are a number of brands out there: Zoom, Yamaha, Korg, Alessis, etc. Any thoughts? Preferences?

Hi, Mike.
If you can bump your budget up to $300, consider the MR8-HD. It has a built in 40 gig hard drive and can record 4 tracks at the same time. Features 4 XLR connectors with phantom power for condensor mics. I have a MUCH more expensive recording rig, but I love the MR8-HD's simplicity. You barely need to crack the manual. I just did an entire album on mine. I did transfer all the recorded tracks to PC and did the editing on the computer. I have a overview of my "garage studio" here.

It just isn't worth buying this sort of kit second hand. Each new item has more spec and particularly more memory or up to date memory cards for less money. Look at the Zoom H4 or the Boss BR Micro. Both cheap and killer spec
