According to Buddy in the book Steel Guitar
Icon by Steve Fishell, he was playing bass for Roger Miller. They were touring England and here he tells the story.
" During the sixties, I had this never-ending want for a "cool hat. With no money, pride, and little work, you have to hang on to something when you look in the mirror. My answer was to look like I didn't care."

Roger told him he like the look and said why don't you wear it onstage.

My intro to steel guitar didn't come from country music and didn't come from Buddy Emmons.
The steel guitars that drew me in were on Jackson Browne albums especially. Sneaky Pete on Browne's For Everyman, in particular, made me say, "I wanna do THAT!"
So, in my early days with steel (lap, not yet pedal), and ignorant of the history and of Buddy Emmons, I used to wear a derby, which I had worn on and off since my hippy days.
Then I found out about Buddy Emmons, heard his music, saw his performances (on video.)
Since that day I have never worn a derby again, except in my other life driving a team of horses or mules for the public. NEVER when playing music.

Jeff, wear it if that is who you are Smile Are you of the dulcimer McFaddens? I have one and it is a fine instrument.

Nope, no relation. Although I have piddled a bit with a dulcimer.
