Hey David -- The 46, while its input is about 25% less than the 23 (a disappointment, but Jon gave me an explanation that was easy to understand; plus he's working on a different ribbon that will make it as hot as the 23), is definitely more "life-like" on the track, requiring little if no e.q.--if you have your mike placed right. The 46 has an obvious (to me) more full, well-rounded sound. Would the average listener--including myself--be able to tell the difference when it's all mixed down and being listened to on whatever one would listen to it on? Oh, I don't think so. I liken it to the Black Box: I can hear a distinct difference with headphones on and listening to just that single track; but mixed down into the rest of the song, it's really hard to tell. But because I know the Black Box and 46 have superior sound/tracking, and I'm a recording enthusiast, there's no way I'll record without them.
