More good comments! A few thoughts in response.
Good on ya CrowBear, many fish bite if you got good bait really gave me a chuckle!
Whip-One finger piano is a piece of cake.
Kenny Dail-Soul and feeling are immesureably important, and can't be written. But it sure is what seperates the good from the great; too bad that can't be transferred electronicly or something, we'd all be great!
Eric West-Determination for damn sure. The lack of it is why American's have enough instruments in attics and closets to equal the gross national product of a small country. I also agree with you about TAB, it is absolutely essential to the study of the steel. Standard notation tells me what its supposed to sound like, but how to play it on the steel requires TAB.
I think it was also Eric who mentioned the hand signals to relay what the key was. This is also something that is very good. Maybe I'll do a post about how to do this later this weekend, I'm on night shift right now and will run out of steam pretty soon. However, it reminds me of one of my favorite musician stories that maybe somebody will get a laugh out of.
As the Benny Goodman Orchestra is warming up for a recording session, the piano player yells to Charlie Christian "Let's play the blues in B". (The tune is called "Blues in B" on the Charlie Christian anthology CD) Well, off they go, and after several choruses, the trumpet player, none other than the immortal Cootie Williams, jumps in to the fray...for about one measure before laying out. (Mind you that concert B is C# to the trumpet) So the tune comes back to the head again, and in jumps Cootie...for about a measure. Quite audibly you can hear him say "What the hell key is that?" Should have used the hand signals! |
