As B0b stated, he is an amateur player, but as a person who advances the beloved steel guitar around the world he is one of the greatest.
Not many individuals have contributed as much as B0b. The SGF is the vital connection to all the news, lesson material, shows, music, anything to do with steel guitar.
It is the total connection for the Steel Guitar Family(SGF).
He has done a fantastic job of establishing and maintaining this link.

If one reads the seven nomination guidelines for HOF induction ( http://www.scottysmusic.com/abouthof.htm ), it will be noted that only two sentences in one paragraph references a nominee's playing skills:
"3. Describe the influences the nominee may have had on other players, such as projecting an identifiable style of playing and innovative musical executions. Provide examples of his/her professional expertise, playing prowess, dramatic delivery, etc. and explain how these qualities influenced others to take up the instrument."
Notice also that those references to skills have qualifying conditions: 1) "Describe the influences the nominee has had on others..." and 2) "...explain how these qualities influenced others to take up the instrument." Thus, being a good, great or even a phenomenal player doesn't automatically lead to HOF induction. In my lifetime I've heard many truly phenomenal players. Only a select few of those players are in the HOF, while those who are have contributed far more than their playing expertise! If the other guidelines are read, it becomes apparent that those six carry more weight than just the one referencing skill in playing the instrument.
The dominating standard from the beginning of the HOF has been the NOMINEES' INFLUENCE that led to the advancement and proliferation of the instrument. For that standard, I feel I could easily show that Bob's creation (the Forum) and his responsible governess of it, has led to the advancement and proliferation of the instrument, perhaps more so than any previous HOF inductee. ...Tom

The Forum is great because of you, the members. All I did was tinker with some off-the-shelf software. I was lucky enough to be the first in our community to do that. I did a good enough job of it, but the content provided by you is what makes the SGF so special. |
Clearly, b0b has influenced scores of new players to take up the instrument. His humble attitude and his suggestion that the Forum be inducted in his stead...is evidence enough that he should be inducted.

Gets my vote! Without "key influencers" like B0b, communities like ours falter and shrivel especially now that country music seems to be actively abandoning the steel.

big yes, Bob has done as much for the Steel Guitar community, bringing it all together and maintaining it as any of the big name players have done. Simply put , the fact that we can even talk about it all together is proof positive of Bobs forward vision. You don't have to be a big name player to be in the big club. Without this site and Bobs dedication we wouldn't even know who most of the players are !

One of the reasons I started to learn the PSG is because of this forum. I have played the 6 string for over 40 years and I had a network of players near me. The PSG is a different breed, no nearby players. When I found the forum i realized, wow, here are a great group of people from whom I can get advice. Everyone has been so kind and generous. Thanks bOb -- A true Hall of Fame indivdual plus it isthe right thing to do.

I will break my self-imposed silence for this one topic and then go back to my hole-in-the-wall. I know b0b doesn't like to necessarily be in the lime light, but I agree with others here that his "creation" has provided an endless supply of knowledge that is not available anywhere else. I have found it to be a never ending supply of knowledge and great folks to deal with. I support and will work with anyone willing to push this forward. I think it's the least we could do.

I agree that Bob and SGF should be recognized at a higher level. ( Citation award at the very least).
You got my vote also. I'll make the effort to approach the board both in writing and personally.
No one deserves it more . IMHO....

I have already received several such awards, Brian, including a very nice plaque from Scotty's International Steel Guitar Convention. I feel that I have received enough recognition already. I have plenty of feathers in my hat; I don't need any more.

If I may add my two cents here, I think bOb is very worthy of a reward which he must already have one but I thought the HOF was for pickers that were above the normal. The ones that we look up to and copy their oringal licks. The ones that toured for years in the back seat of a car or on the bus.
The ones that when they recorded something new we all tried to learn. If any other award is handed out it should be to guys like the Great Bud Carter and others who have designed and made our steel guitar what it is today. Only fifty or so years ago we did not have all the precision steel guitars that we do today. Without them their would not be the greats in the HOF. Just my thoughts, J.R. Rose |
