He was a fav guitarist and musician. Highway Call was a surprise find back in college, and probably the first pedal steel I heard in that setting.

I was 13 and had just started playing guitar when a friend of mine came up to me in drawing class and said Duane Allman had died. I really didn’t know who my friend was talking about, but he said it like it was more important than the moon landing. So I bought a couple of the Bros albums, including Fillmore East, which was soon worn down and scratched up from picking up the record player needle and setting it back down on all those amazing solos. Once I figured out who was playing what, I remember thinking yeah, Duane was great, but that Dickie Betts guy is pretty good, too. And the tunes he wrote…somehow took the listener out of the blues that the band was so famous for and gave them kind of an alternate identity.

Dickie was a true all-around musical artist - a fine instrumentalist, singer, writer, arranger, performer, and let’s face it, he always looked cool too!

RIP, condolences to the Betts family, and all brothers and sisters of the band. I am bowing my head in remembrance and respect.

RIP Dickey. The Allman Brothers Band is a huge influence on my musical taste.

A while back, there was a string discussing the Highway Call Album and Mr. Hughey's playing on it. I have a digitized copy of a soundboard copy of the tour supporting that album when it came out in 1975. In that string, I offered folks on the forum access to a copy of that live show which not only featured Dickey's friends The Poindexters and John Hughey on his Emmons PP, but also Vassar. The offer still stands, just private message me and I will upload the file for download and provide a link. I also have the Highway Call album in digital form copied from the now out of print CD that Craig mentioned he got signed by John that I can provide to you folks.
