Hey guys I got an Oahu Tonemaster this past weekend and it has an unusual issue. The third string, in any position including open, has a weird overtone that is just a little flat of the primary note. It is a really odd warble sound. I tried it with different amps, same thing. It is only on that one string but it is not a frequency as I can place the bar anywhere on the string and it still does it. All the other strings ring clearly. Any ideas? |

The groove at the nut or bridge may be keeping it from sitting properly, or pinching it a bit, and could possibly use a slight re-filing. |

It's a new string, but the bridge is not slotted. Maybe the nut is the issue, I'll look into it in the morning. Thanks! |

Sometimes getting the buzz out of a string is a real pain. It can be at the bridge or nut like Ron sez, and it can make noies if it's the nut, even though the tone bar is above the nut at some higher fret position. Weird I tell ya
Nut files are handy for this problem, but they are not cheap. You can get individual sizes from Stewmac.com if you have to.

I was wondering how it could be the nut if the string is muted behind the bar... I guess I have my work cut out for me, as I am performing with it this afternoon. WHOOPEE!!! |

I too have a lap steel where the third string has an overtone. it is kind of pleasant.
I think it occurs at the nut. I had made a lap steel last year and cut the nut a tad too wide. that third string has a more pronounced overtone. I checked and I did make the nut slots off.
so my somewhat educated guess is the nut as the problem. |

|
|
If the slot in the nut is too deep the bar will rest on the adjacent strings and the middle string will buzz unless you push down hard...
You can put some superglue in the slot and slowly add to it until the slot is the correct depth (when the glue is dry)

Well, as it turns out it was the string. I changed it and the problem is gone. Never had that happen before, so I guess I learned something new! |

If you fixed it with a new string, we all learned a little |
