New to the steel, I've got a question about knee levers. I've got two knees--one on each leg, and each can move in two directions--left and right. So, I don't understand how you can have five knee levers. Told ya I was a newbie! Can someone explain this fifth knee lever to me?

The standard #5 is a vertical lever. You either raise your leg from the hip or push off the A and/or B pedals from the toes. I have 8 levers. The extra 3 are front/back arrayed----you lean or scootch forward or back to activate one, clear the other.

Hey guys, here is a thought about knee levers. Just because one has seven knee levers does not mean one has to always have them all extended..if a couple of them are not called for in the arragement you are playing, just leave them folded back for more comfort in playing..but when called for you have the added tools in your toolbox ready to use..just my 2 cents

A few years ago there was some discussion about forward moving knee-levers. I never understood how that was supposed to work. I guess if you rotated to the right, your left knee would move forward. That would take pretty talented arse-cheeks!

Hi Phil
You don't ever have to follow along with the fifth pedal.Usually vertical, and is not to smooth while learning.
During a seminar along time agao,Jeff Newman had this to say about the vertical. He did not knock it
but said it was not the place to put it for some.
He suggested putting it on the RKL.It can't get any smoother than that.It does work for me,and most that come into the studio try it and make the change.
Not all but most.

Hi Phil, I think I know what you're at when you say each of your 2 knee levers move "both" ways. One direction is for folding to shut the case lid. Move each lever in the direction where you feel the resistance of the spring on the changer unit on the right hand side of your steel. That is the direction that lever has to be moved to make the note/notes alter. Most now have 5 knee levers, but many have more, usually on double nack guitars.

Hi Mickey, Actually, I was making a joking reference to the knees on my legs--not on my steel. You know, I've got two knees and two feet and two legs... Couldn't figure out how two knees could work 5 levers. I'm starting to understand now why I bombed in comedy.

Regarding Alan's post above.

If our lead singer is feeling mischievous he explains a little about the pedal steel - "played with both hands, knees, feet ..... in fact there's only one part of the body he doesn't use ......... his head"

So it's not only known to steelers

Alan,
She has got after me about the pink steel guitar, don't start with her, I think she bites back.

I have 7 knees on one of my guitars.
I use 2 most of the time, I can do most anything I need with them.

With the E to F raise and the B to C# pedal along with the G# to A pedal, most music ever written can be played. The drop from E to D# is an added plus, but not necessary. The 'F' lever will take its place when needed. (A la Lloyd Green).

I humbly admit to having 7 KL's on most of my guitars. Yeah, I love 'em. But they're there for my convenience, not out of necessity.
